I don’t know about you, but I have seasons where I get “stuck” with certain fonts, design concepts or anything to do with styling a website.
One thing that’s evident is that I’ve been having a pretty good makeout session with the Oswald font from Google. In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m using it on my site, the StudioPress site and a number of recently developed child themes.
The Other Woman
I’ll have to admit that I’m getting somewhat bored with Oswald, but there’s been another infatuation brewing. While I’ve always been a fan of the Georgia font, it wasn’t until a few weeks ago did the infatuation turn into a full blown love affair.
The measurements are what I find so appealing – her name is Georgia, she’s got a font size of 16px and her line height is 26px.
And if you want to see what she looks like, check out this sexy thing.
No, I’m not talking about Taylor Swift here – rather the way the font reads on the page. To me, this is pretty much the cleanest article typography I’ve seen in a while.
Using Georgia in that same size on the latest pre-made, loving it.
Got the email, and will reply tonight. Looks great at first impression!
Having 47 year old non-optically enhanced eyes and working on an 11″ MacBook Air have swung my tastes back to the classic serif-ed font. Georgia fits the bill every time.
Wow, 47 years old and an 11″ Air. Maybe I should jack my site up to 18 or 20px font.
Well, I still have my hair.
Look good – going to try it out.
What font are you using for the headings?
Using the aforementioned Oswald for my headlines, blog title and navigation links.
Man I love that but whenever I try to apply it to my own blog I always change it because it looks too much like Times. Conflict!
It’s been a long time since I’ve had Arial (or anything else for that matter) as my main body font. For some reason… I just can’t let go.
It looks amazing here.
There is a song by John Mayer that is really relevant now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhYn7ryaWNE&ob=av3n
I’ve been glad to see your slow decent into typography obsession. Historically, typography was my one beef with StudioPress themes — I always had to spend a lot of time ‘fixing’ it when I installed a new theme.
I’m glad you’re on the wagon now:)
Yeah, it’s something that I’ve cared much more about of late. The Generate theme we recently released is one of the best examples of attention to typography we’ve made.
Did someone get inspired by someone else’s email capture banner on their Genesis website? hmmmm…..
lol
I think Generate is probably the best theme you have done. Not the most versatile Genesis theme, but certainly best looking “out of the box”.
Why yes, I sure did. Funny thing is that I’m not sure if I like how I have mine looking or not.
I think it’s perfect. Now to hunt down a customer to use it.
(don’t fall in love with your own work and don’t look back are things I remember when designing.)
Heh, I very seldom (if at all) fall in love with my own work. That’s why my site gets redesigned every month or two.
You sure do have a love affair with Oswald.. seeing it everywhere.
My personal favorite right now is Trajan Pro. Typography is awesome.
Yep, I’m loving it more and more. Thought I am looking for an Oswald alternative!
Just one question. Where on earth do you get the textures around here?
Here’s a good resource for ya, http://subtlepatterns.com/.
Brian Lis beat me to the punch, as he linked to Subtle Patterns. My background is using the Groovepaper pattern.
Nice! I like. What a great resource.
I used to love Georgia too, but presently Droid Serif is giving me nightly orgasms!
I’m partial to Droid Serif, but it feels too modern for me.
I need a fan. Pshew! Who knew fonts could be hawt?!
ps – your a:hover is pink. also hawt.
(Blows fan in your face to cool ya down…)
Do I sense another redesign looming? Love this font. I’m not huge a fan of Serif fonts, but I do like how clean this one reads.
Heh, no – not planning on another redesign. I’m slowly building a custom homepage for this site, and adding in a few other little things (think email subscribe box at the end of each post) that I didn’t have time to do when I redesigned last.
Great post. I feel every designer is guilty of having periods of different fonts being favourites, then new ones come along and this is an endless cycle. I like that you are passionate about fonts on the web and that choosing beautiful typography is not just for print design. I really like the combination between the bold san-serif ‘Oswald’ and the beautiful classic that is ‘Georgia’.
I agree. My problem is, I LOVE Oswald on my titles & headings, but I think I’m trapped into that font-family thing, so I have a non serif for my text (arial, maybe?) I’ll have to see if I can change the text font and keep my Oswalds.
(WordPress self-hosted, Oxygen theme.)
and, correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like your headings are now Helvetica?
Anyway, looks good.
I went with Droid Serif for titles and Droid Sans for text on my site. It simple but sexy.
