What’s Your Guilty Pleasure?

I’ll be willing to bet that before you even took a moment to look inward, you’ve already begun to make fun of me. How easy it is to point the finger elsewhere, when in fact, you’re probably well past the initial stages of your own denial.

The truth is, we all have guilty pleasures…

And mine’s Twilight. Call it what you want, I consider it being culturally relevant.

Whether or not we want to admit it to ourselves, or even publicly, they do exist. Most of them are too “guilty” that they make us feel, in fact, guilty. And that leads to the notion that we should feel ashamed and therefore we seek to hide them from anyone we know. Or don’t know.

Welcome to My Personal Life

I’ve vowed to share my world with you – the little voices that I hear inside my head and how they affect my business world.

So here I am, confessing the fact that I love the Twilight saga. And yes, I listen to the Twilight soundtracks throughout the day, and have the movies on at night when I’m still working. That means every theme I develop has been hand-crafted to the sounds of Paramore, or while watching Edward saving Bella from being hit by a car.

I don’t feel the need to defend mine – I’m secure with that. But I will challenge you too seek inward and consider sharing what your guilty pleasure is.

my guilty pleasures are…mmm…it’s a toss up between xbox with my lovely soon-to-be-wife and breaking WordPress.

although, I really have to toss in traveling too, I don’t get to do that enough — but I love it when I do it.

  2. says

Mine, at the moment, is watching “LOST” on Netflix Instant Watch after my wife goes to bed. Sometimes while sitting in the tub, soaking my sore muscles from the gym.

Other than that, I lead a pretty guilt-less life. ;-)

  3. says

Not sure what my specific guilty pleasure would be.. I’m an infosorter .. I pretty much reading interesting articles, insightful or entertaining video clips and actually quite often a documentary. And yes.. breaking WordPress as well.

Nothing wrong with ‘pleasuring’ yourself right ;)

    Thanks for sharing Brian!

Glee… That and stupid online flash games I pick up from kids at school… Currently it’s Cargo Bridge on Limex Games but I also like the Dyson Telescope game.

    • says

My sister and parents watch Glee, and have recommended that I check it out – haven’t had a chance though… as for online flash games, the only one I’ve ever gotten roped into is Wheel of Fortune. :-)

Mine is color theory. Whenever we are choosing colors for interior/exterior painting, Andrea is choosing coordinating fabrics for quilt tops, etc. or designing one of our sites, I’m in the thick of things.

And, yes, I do go to the fabric store with Andrea and enjoy it :D

  6. says

well, right this second it’s white grape Fruit Marvels from Willy Wonka…but I do have willpower to resist them.

My true guilty pleasure is knitting…how I love to sink my hands into alpaca yarn and just imagine the possibilities! Plus, I get to be armed at all times with sharp pointy sticks, and I will use them on the first person who teases me about knitting in San Francisco! :P

  7. Craig says

I have a passion for Motorcycles, so I don’t consider that a guilty pleasure!!! There is nothing better than wind in your face and once in a while, the need for speed!

I guess my real guilty pleasure is watching American Idol. Secretly I wish I could sing, well I can, but the dogs start howling when I do, IYKWIM. So I have to live vicariously through Am Idol.

  8. says

Mine, I think would have to be sneaking into the little kids nursery at our church. I like little kids. They are cute, fun and have no hangups.

I used to describe myself as “A biker computer nerd who likes to cave, rock climb and baby sit.” That’s still pretty accurate.

    • says

Nothing wrong with liking little kids… although when you have a 5 year old, your love for infants goes away a bit. Self-sufficient children (when they’re your own) are much better than the alternative. Craig can appreciate your love for biking and being a nerd. He does both. Well.

      • says

Don’t worry it will come back. I’ve 4 kids at home ages 6-14. By now the baby maintenance stuff can all be done on autopilot. It’s the older ones all wanting one on one time that gets trickier to juggle.

So you look at the little ones and wish for a time you could just pick them up and hold them and that would satisfy all their worldly needs at that moment.

  9. says

I think I would have to say I have two….and a bit of a dichotomy!
I ADORE Harry Potter…..was crazy sad when the l finished the last book! Before each movie my kids & I marathon through all the previous ones…already a little sad there’s only two more movies (even if I know what happens).

The other is Chelsea Lately on “E”……she’s a bit of a nut, but hilarious!

    • says

I never got into the Harry Potter thing, but am already experiencing the same as you knowing that there are only two more Twilight movies. Perhaps I can coerce Stephanie to write a few more novels. As for Chelesa Lately, she never appealed to me – kinda like nails on a chalkboard. :-P

      • Craig says

Twilight ???? isn’t that a chick-flick … all the women including my wife are gaga over the books & its male characters.

  10. says

You’re kidding me! I was pleasantly shocked to see this post. My guilty pleasure, also Twilight, has changed my life. Long story short… My daughter and I are Twi-hard fans. We traveled around to all the Twilight movie sets and Forks; started blogging about it; turned the blog into a book and two weeks ago we opened a Twilight fan store in St Helens Oregon where the Swan house and many scenes in Twilight were filmed. (the very short version)

We use your church theme on my daughter’s Twilight blog: http://twilightblogs.com

If you ever want to come visit the Twilight scenes in the NW, let me know and I’ll hook you up ;-)

    • says

Hey Kathy – that’s awesome, and glad to see you sporting quality themes on both sites. Not sure I can drag my wife Shelly on a plane though – and I’m still hounding her to watch the movies.

      • says

You’re kidding! Do you know how many wives would kill to get their husbands to watch, tolerate or maybe even like Twilight? LOL! Thank God my dh is very supportive of my Twilight obsession. I also love that my daughter and I can share in it together– she’s 20 and is a co-owner in the store.

I’ve been using your themes since Rev was brand new ;-) Church is one of my faves– both Twilight sites were using it until recently (thought I’d try out Thesis). Another of my fave sites that I used one of your Rev themes on: http://beachpets.com

Have you read Midnight Sun? It’s Twilight from Edward’s point of view. It’s not finished but it’s my favorite of all Stephenie’s books. You really get to see Edward’s sense of humor.

How come? The feed does not have subscriptions by email enabled…
I would love to get a copy of you everyday in my mailbox;-)

  12. says

Twilight isn’t far from my guilty pleasure. Researching UFO sightings on the web and posting my thoughts to my BLOG. Maybe that’s just “sci” rather than “fi” – it can certainly be a form of horror if you look deeply.

  13. says

TV on DVD/Blu Ray. It’s an addiction. In the last couple of years, I’ve been in a science fiction phase. I’ll honestly watch an entire science fiction series, no matter how awful the acting.

Oh, and I also own all seven seasons of the Gilmore Girls on DVD.

  14. Peter says

My guilty pleasure is asking people challenging questions.

I’m interested to know how you can reconcile your love for something like Twilight with your claim to be a Christian and follower of Jesus. Things like the Twilight saga are at considerable odds with a Christian worldview, and are quite anti Christian or not?

    • says

Peter, first off – I don’t “claim” to be a Christian, I “am” a Christian.

Second, for me it’s simply entertainment – in my mind there’s no confusion as to whether there is truth in what the movie depicts. There is a fine line between fiction (ie the movies) and real life and what I believe.

  15. says

Hmmm. Besides Ashley I don’t think anyone knows this… House Hunters on HGTV or pretty much any home improvement or real estate show.

Oh and although I love fancy steakhouses and restaurants… I’m a total sucker for Red Lobster and KFC at least once a month.

  16. steviferg says

    *Like*
I do some of my best work while listening to soundtracks (including Twilight, Harry Potter & Lord of the Rings), or while a tv show or movie is playing in the background (including Doctor Who & Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Sometimes I feel a little ridiculous and tell myself “hey, you’re a grown-up, with a grown-up job, what’s wrong with you?” But then I answer myself – “If it makes the work time more pleasant & isn’t distracting from your focus you shouldn’t feel bad. Oh, and stop talking to yourself, weirdo.”

  17. says

My guilty pleasure is reading a book cover to cover in one “sitting” — which is precisely what happened over the weekend, thanks to you, Brian.

My daughter just recently gave me the books to trade in and I thought, well, if Brian likes the movie maybe I’ll watch it, but not before I read the book. I enjoyed it, the setting being a real treat because it’s where my husband and I spent the first 5 days of our honeymoon. There’s some pics on our website. We go back every few years (not since the books came out though. I wonder how the locals feel about all the attention now). The western shores of the Olympic Penn are one of my favorite places in world. I enjoyed the movie too.

  18. MomKat says

(an exhortation from one Christian and follower of Jesus Christ, to another) Walking the straight and narrow road is not an easy thing to do, especially in these times. “Be ye Holy, for I am Holy”

I remind myself daily, that my life’s charge is to fulfill the purpose for which I was brought into this world (Rev 4:11).

2 Corinth 6:14 – What communion hath light with darkness?

Eph 5:8 – For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light

Eph 5:11 – And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Eph 6:12 – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

  19. says

I think as far as guilty pleasures go, there are worse things than enjoying Twilight. :-)

And, “breaking WordPress” is most definitely among my list, too.

  20. says

heh~ liking Twilight has only become a guilty pleasure when people starting bashing it and its fans :/ I think it’s completely allright to like it~~ I liked the books myself and the first movie +the soundtracks/scores.

I’m not sure if I have any guilty pleasures, though. I don’t feel guilty for anything I like or enjoy :D

  21. says

I’ll have to keep my wife away from this site. She is trying to convince me to get into Twilight. I go to the movies with her, but no time for the books (at least that’s my excuse)/

  22. Heather says

Ok, so I am supposed to be link building for my job when I came across this post… I LOVE everything Twilight! I actually loved Paramore before Twilight. Whatever, I don’t care what anyone says it’s an excellent story and I can’t get enough! I just got Stephanie Meyer’s new book, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” and I can’t wait to read that either! One last little embarrassing detail, if you go to http://www.stepheniemeyer.com you can read part of Twilight from Edward’s point of view… LOVE IT! =P

  23. says

So I am going to guess you are Team Edward. I never got into twilight, I read the first book and was not a fan so I moved on.

My guilty pleasures are the WWE (might have actually applied to be a writer for them; admit it, writing matches for a living would be fun).

And I do break WordPress also. However, I can never get the thing back together.

  24. says

Oh good gravy. I just found this post when you posted about the redesign on Twitter.

I’m so showing my husband this. I’ve been begging him to read the books for awhile now. The movies are fun eye candy, but I think the books do a better job with understanding the character’s heads. ( I have some pretty good bribes in place if he reads them, too! )

Did you see that they are making Breaking Dawn into 2 movies? My girlfriends and I went to the midnight showing of Eclipse at the theater where they played all 3 in a row, with Eclipse starting at 12:01. Such fun. The Breaking Dawn trailer played and the girls just screamed.

    But my guilty pleasure???

A fresh copy of Real Simple magazine, hot hot water in the jacuzzi, and a tall glass of something to drink with tons of ice – where you can see the ice steam over. Perfection.

No php or ie woes or design by committee stuff to think about there.

Oh, and I have a series Nikkor lens addiction. Would take very little bribery for me to read something juicy my hub wanted me to read with the promise of a lens.

    This new design rocks.
