Welcome, the Genesis Tutorial Suggestion Box is Open

Now that I’m (relatively) happy with my current site design, it’s time to focus on content. You may have notice that recently I added a code section, and now I want to focus on creating a tutorials section.

So far, here is a list of tutorials that I have written for using the Genesis Framework:

Looking for Suggestions

While I’m pretty good at reading minds, I want to supply what you’re looking for. I’d like to open up the comments section in this post for suggestions on Genesis Tutorials.

In other words, what do you want to know how to do? How can I help you understand it better? What features are you looking for more explantation?

    3) And related posts and social media icons as shown on copyblogger single post after content.

    Hi Brian
    Loving the series.

    My suggestion…
I’ve read a few articles on hooks / filters and registering sidebars, but it still means very little to me.

I’d love to understand the idea of hooks, know where abouts in the page I’m adding something and then go ahead and do it.

Sorry to be so vague so perhaps a practical example would explain.

I run the Minimum theme for by business site.
If I wanted to add a section for text between the portfolio images and footer… how would I di it?

Do I start by sketching out what I want then deciding where abouts the hook needs to be and then….

Rambling suggestion but I’m struggling somewhat.

    Brian,
I appreciate that you are “self taught” since it’s a path I’m on. What resources did you find help during the early stages of your learning process? Are there any must-read books that should be on our shelves to reference? Thanks!

    Tim

I like the tabbed widget suggestion above, but I’d rather have “styled” tabs. How about a quick primer on styling yo tabs ;-)
Also would love to be able to create and install those exact same red ‘Click to continue … ‘ buttons that Copyblogger has ;-)
By the way, did you notice that stylin’ our profilin’ seems to be popular amongst … me ;-)

How to make different optin forms for text widgets. Like all the code that comes with an Aweber optin, which parts do you really need to make it horizontal. Especially since Generate came out.

The best thing to do Bill would be to drop all of the optin form code into the text widget and see how it looks. Since all form code will vary, it’s hard to do a blanket tutorial on how to do. On our demo, I tested each one – simply looked for instances of
      and

      <br />

      and

      <div style="clear:both">

and removed those so they form wouldn’t take up as much vertical real estate.

    Hi Brian,

Loving all the info you are putting up!

I was wondering if you could do an in depth post/tutorial on custom subscription boxes and mail chimp integration?

I know that it is just customising the for and some functions php extras but I just cant get it sussed! Even with the awesome support at Studiopress.

    Kind Regards

    Louis

Hey Louis – yes, that’s definitely a possibility. I need to start off easy, by explaining how to get the subscription box up. Then I can piggyback that post with more specific examples of how it can be used.

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for all the great info you provide. I would like to learn how to add previous and next buttons to a single portfolio page (such as the balance theme) so that you can scroll through all entries as an infinite loop.

Furthermore it would be great if I you could explain how to add all the portfolio previews underneath the main content of a single portfolio page. This way when you scroll down you would have all the preview options with out going back to the main portfolio screen.

    Many thanks
    Stuart

OK great, thanks for the response. Yes, I did wonder if it was perhaps a bit more complicated than your average tutorial. It would be great if you could sort it out though. Their are a lot of creative folk out there that I think this would be useful to. My fingers are crossed. Many thanks!

I’d like to see a tutorial on how to split the sidebar, just like on the current theme you’re using. For example, if I had 8 categories, it will be 4 – 4, 4 on the right, 4 on the left (just and example)

I love that I have found Genesis & StudioPress! Although, I am satisfied with the support, I think the forums could use more sticky posts with practical links to tutorials, frequent questions, etc. This would cut down on some of the questions that the forum managers have to answer. :-)

New version of Genesis is great. One issue that continues to arise with Genesis is the following warnings when scanning with Google Structured Data Testing Tool
    1. Warning: Missing required field “entry-title”.
    2. Warning: Missing required field “updated”.
    3. Warning: Missing required hCard “author”.

    Some recommend the following solution
    1. Find and wrap it with a new span class, like this:
    2. Find (may also be listed as ) and wrap it with:
    3. Find (or some variant of that) and wrap it with:
Cannot find where to find the code described
Will either Genesis 1.9.1 or 2.0 fix this?
