Many folks have asked me if it’s possible to embed a tweet in a blog post. Twitter makes that extremely easy to do so all you need to do is follow these instructions.
Login to your Twitter account, and go to your “tweets” page. If you’re logged in, all you need to do is go to your Twitter page like mine at http://twitter.com/bgardner.
Look for the tweet you want to embed and then click on the “expand” link and then you’ll see some more information about the tweet. You’ll notice a “details” link after the date, so go ahead and click that.
Here’s a screenshot to show you what this will look like:

After you click the “details” link, your tweet will open into it’s own page. There you will see the tweet, who retweeted and favorited it as well as a “embed this tweet” link.
Click the “embed this tweet” link, and a screen will pop up which gives you options for embedding your tweet.
Here’s a screenshot to show you what this will look like:

Once you’ve selected the options you want for embedding your tweet, copy the code that is provided to you and paste it into your blog post.
Here’s an example of what an embedded tweet looks like:

In 3.4 this will be even easier.
Get the URL of the tweet the same way. Paste it in just like you would paste in a video
It’s oEmbeded
You won’t get the cool options (yet, I’m sure that’ll be sussed out), but they aren’t rolled out to everyone yet.
Awesome. WordPress is pretty much the bomb, isn’t it?
Once 3.4 comes out, I’ll see how it functions and update the post.
I love when I typo my own email…
I’ve been using it on my site for a couple months, and the only thing ‘missing’ is the options. So without the fall-back of blockquotes, it comes up as just a URL. I imagine the embed API will be tweaked over time.
Hmm. Never noticed other options were possible. Well, too late for 3.4, probably, but here’s a patch that might make it in the next version:

Huh. You know, I added the oembed patch for Twitter back in December, and I’ve been using trunk on my own sites for so long now, that I had forgot that it still hadn’t rolled live to everywhere.
Anyway, this plugin code works for 3.3 if you haven’t upgraded yet. It essentially performs exactly the same as the addition in 3.4, except that it hooks in as a plugin would do it instead.

That is awesome!!! I had no idea it was so easy. I just tried it, easy-peasy. Thanks Brian!
You betcha Thauna, always happy to share the wisdom that I have from Googling “how to do this and that”.
Something to consider, with WP 3.4 you’ll be able to use oEmbed to display tweets. Just put the URL of the tweet in the editor and…that’s is

Thanks Andrew, you probably didn’t see this comment when making yours, but good to know that the WordPress devs know what’s up.
ahhhh, I’ve always wanted to know how to do that! That was easy! New(er) to the world of Twitter. Maybe you need to do a tutorial on the ins and outs of Twitter…I’m just winging it
I see you’ve still got problems with the Gravatar thing – maybe when we come over for the BBQ I’ll open the laptop and help you with that!
Brilliant and so easy when shown how.
Thanks once more Brian.
Sure thing Keith. I figured some folks don’t know how to do this and like you, don’t understand how simple it is.
Thanks for this useful tip
Never tried this before…
I wasn’t aware of that method. Worth a shot. I’ve been using a plug-in called Blackbird Pie that delivers similar results, though at the cost of another plugin:

I try my best to do everything on my site with the fewest number of plugins as possible.

Is there a tool to make tweetable quotes? Halpern uses them in his blog copy to incentivize tweets. Example:
“inspirational quote in blog copy” – philosopher [Tweet this]
I know you can hardcode one using the /intent/ url system, but it is pretty annoying..
Thanks!

Interested in this tool (if available) too. Maybe Brian will rock with another post about how to make something like this
Hmm, it would be cool to create a general “welcome” tweet and embed that into a sidebar.
Sweet. That’s something I’d noticed bloggers doing with more frequency, and was curious about how it was done. Thanks for sharing it.
I tried this but it does not embed it with the picture and graphics – just text and it does link the hashtags but not my twitter handle. Ideas on what I’m missing?
Which pictures are you referring to? This is to embed a tweet, so not sure what images you’re talking about.
When I was embedding the tweet, it would not include my twitter picture or the pictures of those who RT’d the tweet. It was all simply text with just hashtags hyperlinked. My twitter handle wasn’t hyperlinked.
I ended up using a widget to get it to work.
Yes you’re right Brian, it only works for tweet. If what you mean is a tweet of an image, that won’t work Melissa, even if you use plugin like black bird pie.
Thanks brian for such a great help and I was looking to embed my tweets but don’t know how to do that. But, now I can do it easily.
Thanks again
