WordPress as a CMS (Content Management System)

I can’t begin to tell you how many people email me and ask me if I’d suggest using WordPress as a CMS. (Content Management System) One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that since WordPress is a blogging platform, that it can only be used for blogs.

I disagree. In fact I have now created the Revolution WordPress theme to accomplish that!

In fact, I strongly disagree, and that is the number one reason I taught myself how to modify PHP and CSS files, so that I could accomplish what many people think is impossible – creating an online presence with the appearance of a website, but the functionality of a blog.

On behalf of myself and countless others who want this capability, I’d like to send a HUGE thank you to Matt and the guys at Automattic for creating such an incredibly awesome platform.

So if you are looking to have a website created, and would like to use WordPress as a CMS, you can contact me and we can talk about your project.

You want examples of sites that I’ve done and are using WordPress as a CMS? Trying checking out this site and that site and you will see that it is definitely possible to use WordPress as a content management system.

This was my goal with http://www.mdcrei.com I think it looks pretty good for this. I wish it were updated more, but I don’t control that.

I am putting the finishing touches on a site that I designed using your Zinfandel theme as the base that now functions as a more traditional web site with a CMS interface so the client can update it themselves. I will send you a link once it is finished.

Wordpress as a CMS for “traditional” sites – I say ABSOLUTELY!

  3. Jennifer, nice work! Char, yes, I agree wholeheartedly, that WP should power EVERY website out there!! :) And please drop the link when you are done, I’d love to see it!

Brian, I agree. I’m building http://www.arnanut.gl with WordPress and Gengo plugin (2 languages, and no, you probably won’t understand either)!

  5. I’ve long believed that Wordpress is capable of handling a lot of web sites. I think most people just don’t take the time to learn about it enough to know what it can do. I’m actually proposing Wordpress as a content management system to a school district in Texas who wants to update their website. I’m designing their theme and showing them what they can do with it. I think they’d be crazy to go another way.

  6. Jason, I agree, and think there are so many niches out there that can use WordPress as a content management system. Schools, Real Estate Agents, Lawyers… the list goes on and on.

  7. Very true, Wordpress is suitable as a CMS in many cases. I used it recently to build a magazine website – Complete Wellbeing. Although, I feel that it is difficult to handle multiple content types. Otherwise, Wordpress is one of the best tools for any publishing activity.

One of my most popular project requests is for Wordpress integration and it’s amazing the variety of websites that come through. In the 25+ integrations I’ve done this year, I’ve yet to find a project where Wordpress hasn’t been up to par.

In regards to using Wordpress as a CMS, absolutely. The more I’ve worked with it and learned the ins and outs, the more I enjoy working with it even more :) .

Keep up the good work Brian! Looking forward to seeing more of your design work before long.

  9. I love WP but do have a question. How about a few years down the track when there could be e.g. 2000 posts? Does this makes any difference?

I did hear that WP isn’t designed for this, and it could slow it down. Is that a myth?

    Any insights much appreciated.
