WordPress 2.7 Threaded Comments

26

I have been asked by many people if my Revolution themes will be updated to accommodate WordPress 2.7 and Threaded Comments. The answer is yes, with thanks to a few lattes, 2 1/2 hours and posts that I’ve read from Otto and Justin.

I have spent the past night or so playing around with this, and have a working demo of what the threaded comments will look like. This style will ultimately be applied to all of the Revolution themes that I develop - mainly because it’s universal code that will be able to be copied and pasted into your existing theme files.

And I have also coded the themes to revert back to the original comments if a site is running WP 2.6.3 or older - this way the theme will be compatible with the latest version, but won’t break when someone applies it to an older version of WordPress.

I wanted to get a jump on this, to make sure that when WordPress comes out with version 2.7, some of the ground work will be done for theme updates.

Let me know what you think!

Hi Brian, I was wondering if your other themes will have also compatibility with wordpress 2.7. Im using White Space…

    Thanks

  2. Otto says:

Very cool on you for getting ahead of the game on the comment threading! :)

Gotta say, those are some fairly neat themes over there. Too bad they’re all fixed width or I might switch to one of them.

  3. Marshal, I honestly don’t know - first I am going to update all of the existing Revolution 2 themes to be compatible with WP 2.7, then plan to go back and rebrand all of my free themes here onto the Revolution site - at which point this will occur.

Otto, thanks - great post you wrote about this, very helpful. Sorry I don’t do fluid width themes, I’m too much of a control freak for that. :)

Mmm…thats ok man…I’dont mind waiting anyway, I will try to make it work on my own to see how it goes jeje…Thanks for the info and for the nice theme (Whitespace)

  5. Themeplate says:

    Wow.. wonderful Brian. Thanks

I’ve just implemented the church theme (for my church), go figure. So what you’re saying is that I’ll be able to just copy and paste into the existing theme and not have to upload any files. Is that assumption correct?

btw. Thanks so much for the awesome themes Brian.

  7. Mark, yes, that is correct - I am going to do my best to make all updates that way, so that people who have customized their themes don’t have to redo their entire site each time I update.

  8. Susan says:

what a great feature! I like that!

  9. Barry O says:

    Brian,

I love the threaded comments styling. I’ve been trying to find a plug-in for my 2.6 installs that will do that and have had very little luck.

    Can’t wait for 2.7.

  10. Otto says:

As for updating, WordPress is looking into making themes listed on the wordpress.org extend site capable of auto-updating. You might consider looking into that as well, or asking somebody over there about it.

  11. David Bain says:

Very professional… this is night and day compared with what WordPress used to be like 2 years ago

  12. Danny Dang says:

With the movement to RevolutionTwo, am I correct to assume that previous bought themes will not see this update?

  13. Danny, I have every intention on making the previous themes compatible with threaded comments - truth be told, the way I’m coding it will be very easy to swap out your current comments with the new code.

  14. I look at the comment tables and it seems that the field has been available for some time now.

There’s a lot to learn on Wordpress. I’m just one of the lucky ones who adopted Wordpress as a platform instead of the usual bloggish layouts and followed your tracks from one of your articles.

Maybe this theme could use the nested comments, too? (Just kidding)

  15. George, when you say “this theme” are you referring to me using threaded comments on my personal blog here?

  16. Andy Hoyland says:

Nicely done Brian. I’m loving Wordpress 2.7 so far - really like the admin side of it but the threaded comments is one of my favourite parts.

  17. imran says:

Hi, Thanks for these beautiful templates. Can you tell me what happened to those Revolution News/Tech Templates? are they dead? something must have happened I can’t find them any more?

  18. Steven Jones says:

    Brian,

Do you think that normal comments are going to be phased out of WordPress with the addition of threaded comments or is it going to be whichever the user prefers?

  19. Steven, the way I see it, it’s a matter of choice.

  20. Samsara says:

How exciting for blogs that rely on user comments. I know that sounds silly but until recently my site was just an “article” site and I didn’t _want_ to be part of the blogosphere.

All that’s now changed and I cannot stop [r]evolution[?]. SO, Brian. I have decided that but for one of my websites - because I already have it under way with another theme that I only halfway like - I am going with Revolution themes. I have lifestyle going on with one now that will launch in another month or so.

After spending a year looking at themes and pulling them apart [I have ADD too, so looking for an excuse NOT to launch is always right around the corner],, I have to say… Revolution is by far the most correctly working, fully functional, customizable-friendly, and extensible theme I have found.

So thanks for being SO awesome in open-sourcing these themes to us. SO awesome.

Question: Are the threaded comments going to be a choice in Revolution for WP 2.7? [ie, Will we be able to turn them off?] I would not have a desire to turn them off because I think threaded comments are excellent but I do wonder if there would be folks who wouldn’t like the feature.

  21. Troy says:

Brian, will you post the code here or do we have to e-mail you to receive the code? I have 2.7 installed and have one of your themes I downloaded at wordpress.org.

  22. 魑魅魍魉 says:

I really love the revolution one themes, such as revolution sport, revolution news etc. Could I download those theme from somewhere??

  23. Mark Ham says:

Hey Brian, for those of us who are already running WP 2.7 beta2, is there any way we can get the code for the threaded comments for the revolution church theme? Many thanks in advance.

  24. Andy Hoyland says:

Mark Ham - are you using the Rev Church theme for a church site? I’d like to see it if you are! I’m managing my church site and use a slightly customised version of magazine and thinking of making a switch… would love to see Rev Church in action for a church.

  25. I spent most of the weekend working with the church theme - love it! It was easy to work with too. But when I updated to WP 2.7, the gallery stopped working and my background and header are not showing. I even deleted the theme with it’s customizations and started over, but it’s not helping. Any ideas?
