The New Revolution Two Wireframe

I have been very busy this week developing what I am going to use as the new Revolution Two theme wireframe. I have been wanting to do this for quite some time, and finally have begun.

You might be wondering what this means – well, it means I am in the process of developing a new theme that will be released on the Revolution Two site. But more than that, this is going to be fully coded for WordPress 2.7, and include a number of different code/style changes than previous Revolution themes have had.

I’m taking this time to explore new and better ways of doing things, to make customizing the theme(s) a lot easier on the user. I am also developing a number of page templates that have been requested over the past year.

Here is the current list of page templates that will be included:

  • Archive Page
  • Author Page
  • Blog Page
  • Featured Page
  • Full Width Page
  • Product Page
  • Video Page

That list might change, so don’t hold me to it – but I’m hoping to include all of them, if not more with the next theme release.

I will also be using this theme I am working on as the foundation of all future themes that I develop. I’ve spent the better part of the past two weeks doing a lot of research on WP 2.7, new code, and better ways to get things accomplished. (Special thanks goes out to Nathan for a few 911 chats!)

So hopefully this means a much better experience with Revolution moving forward. And before I forget, you can see a screenshot of the theme I’m working on below. This is only a sample single page, but you can see the general style that the theme will have.

Here’s the screenshot… (click to enlarge)

Looks fantastic, Brian. Looking forward to it!

  2. Thanks Bruce, I have high expectations for this one, so I’m taking my time to develop it right!

Here is one that I will get to at some point, but have not yet:

    index page
a page that shows the content of that page, then dynamically shows list and maybe some text of the child pages.

    When would people use it?
On JonathanNation.com I’m looking at doing series. Currently talking about Thanksgiving. Well, the Giving Thanks page http://www.jonathannation.com/series/giving-thanks/ is a page template I set up to pull in the individual posts set in a specific category in the correct order (chronological, with the first post first).

Sometime soon, if you don’t beat me to it, I’ll have the page template I mentioned where the series page ( http://www.jonathannation.com/series/ ) will show the original and then dynamically show an index of all the series.

I like what I’m seeing! Well done!

  5. Matej says:

Speechless … wow! This is something really different, will there be “magazine” layout also?

  6. WordSkill says:

Wonderful, thank you so much for your continued hard work.

  7. Thanks everyone, glad there are positive vibes so far. Matej, the homepage on this theme will offer the ability to use it for a magazine or news site. I’m also considering a few homepage options, in order to accommodate those looking to use the theme for their business as well.

  8. Brad Potter says:

    Brian,

May I suggest that you consider moving the search feature out of the navigation bar on your new framework? It greatly limits the amount of nav items you can place there (6, 7, 8 or more items is typical of most websites, especially magazine type sites). How about having the search right above the enews and updates in its own area, above the banner ad, or maybe in the top color bar? I realize it can be moved, just a thought.

    Thanks for all your effort!

  9. Thanks Brad, I see your point, and this is always something I struggle with when I develop themes – where to put the time, the rss links, the search bar, the enews signup – always too many things to fit into a few navbars. I’ll see what I can do, but I might just leave it and let people move it to a place they’d prefer it to be.

  10. Jayson says:

Brian, first I want to say how impressed I have been with Revolution. Being a developer and entrepreneur I have always been psyched to find others that are, well, one the same page. I would love to see your new designs with the above mentioned features, especially video and author pages. Let me know when you get out to CO, its dumpin right now.

  11. Susan says:

Very nice Brian!! Your themes seem to get better and better each time and you make it quite difficult for the “newcomer” to come along and just choose “one”…

How was the concert?? Did you have a good time?? I bet it was just an awesome experience!!!

  12. Jayson, don’t tell me stuff like that right now – you think I want to be dreaming of powder when I’m trying to get a theme out? :-) Actually, I’m pretty stoked as there’s a good chance that I might be heading to Taos this season with Cory Miller to hit the slopes!

  13. I can’t wait for the threaded comments. I’m already full of ideas for how to use those on my blogs ;)

  14. Dave says:

Great Idea Brian, I can see this being really useful.

  15. Rich Owings says:

Can’t wait to see the product page. You might want to consider how it would function as a product review page.

  16. reb says:

Looking good…and the wide page is probably the number one request I get, so I’m glad you’re including it! ;)

  17. Tina W says:

    Hi Brian,

Are you pursuing the parent/child theme concepts? I was thinking if this new theme would be the new parent and then you created lots of child variances from that. Would make it easier for updates…

    Just thinking out loud. :)

  18. Looks great. Not sure if this is something that makes sense to think about now, but is it possible to make the way the search is implemented on the theme so that it is easy to decide between the WordPress search and Google (or another) search.

    Keep up the great work.
    Molly

  19. dmarkette says:

    What does wireframe mean?

You are the guy who invented Wordpress right?

You seem like the goto man for everything blog related.

    Pretty Impressive.

    Thanks
    dmarkette

  20. Wow..

    again another wow after wows!

    all the best mate!

  21. Remkus says:

I’m also very curious about a possible integration of the parent / child theme integration in this new Wireframe…

  22. Michael Erb says:

Another nice design Brian. I’ve also taken a look at the demo for a theme called Flexx from iThemes. It has some powerful theme customization options. It might provide some inspiration… not that you need much inspiration, but it does provide some powerful theme options that I’ve never seen implemented in this way before.

  23. martijn says:

Is it possible to emphasize a bit more on RSS subscription in the design?

  24. Jerry Roberts says:

    Hey Brian,

I like a little “air” in the words I write and what I’ve seen in Revolution 2 is a bit cramped. I notice that the type style above is much more readable. Is it easy to change the typography in R2, or a headache that nobody should have. Thanks.

  25. aldenddlove says:

Some warm style for deals sites thanks.

  26. Hey everyone, thanks for your comments so far – I’ve been out of town this weekend, but wanted to let you know I’ve read what you’ve written. I’m still doing research on the parent/child thing, so the jury is still out in terms of if this will include that!

  27. Mike says:

    Brian,

Please consider what is really important to realtors (and I am one): LISTINGS. Unless I’m mistaken, not one comment above has come from a realtor.

The MOST important aspect of a realtor’s website is the ability for potential buyers to SEE and SEARCH for homes.

On the “home” page, instead a flash movie scrolling fast through one house at a time, please integrate a widget/plugin allowing listings to appear in the right column (big thumbs). Click through to a page with properties (thumb & description) appearing horizontally on a page. Click each one and get a specific property page.

The theme also should have IDX integration.

Brian, I’ll be glad to help you, as currently realtors have two choices: crappy templates or custom Flash. One of my sites is a membership site for realtors. Beyond my needs, I clearly understand what realtors, visitors & search engines want (and hope) to see.

When buyers or sellers show up to a site, they don’t want the entire screen to be taken up with a realtor’s mug or an image of some palatial estate. They’re looking for MLS search and/or pictures of houses.

Yet, not ONE theme I’ve discovered seems to be built with realtors (and buyers’ & sellers’) needs in mind. Very surprising.

    Mike

  28. ScottK says:

    The new theme looks incredible.

Two things I’d like it to include are having the featured post be simply the most recent post and not a gallery, and being able to customize the featured categories through the back end.

  29. Remkus says:

Who are on that jury and how can we influence them ;)

  30. Kris says:

    Mike-

Actually Brian created a Revolution Real Estate Theme a while back, and I used it to create a fully-functional website for a real estate client of mine. Take a look: Lowry Real Estate Group.

I was able to integrate current listings, featured properties, an MLS search page, all the bells and whistles. I certianly would love a new theme with the features of WP 2.7 integrated, and something tailored a little more towards listings, but I did what I could with what I had.

    Brian-

The new design of this theme looks amazing. I’m looking forward to using it immediately once it’s finished. Do you have plans to have a showcase gallery like you did on RevolutionTheme.com? I’ve used several of your themes, including some new ones from RevolutionTwo, and I’d love for you to showcase my work, if you think it’s worthy. Let me know.

    Thanks!
