Streamline Theme Beta Version Released

Now before you yell at me for working on Christmas Eve, just know that it’s 6:00 in the morning and my family is still sleeping. And I’m really doing my best to get a few things done before Christmas comes.

That being said, I just wanted to announce that the Streamline theme beta version is available. As mentioned, I am releasing the theme in beta version, so people can use it and find any potential bugs before I officially release it as a 1.0 version.

Take it for a test drive and let me know what you think!

On a side note, there will be a few small changes to the Revolution Two site effective January 1st – I won’t get into those details of that beforehand, so please don’t ask. But in the meantime…

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hi Brian, Looks great, gone check it out this week!
But you have to check the donwolad link on the revolutiontwo site….or are you working on ti right now?
At this moment it point to the lifestyle file, just changing the name of the zip file worked fine :-)

  6. YEESS!!! This is exactly what we were looking for – for our personal blog! Tried the blog code-blue them and that just wasn’t “us”. :-)

Maybe it’s just early and I’m still foggy, but I can’t see the download link?

    Thanks Brian!
    Dan

P.S. how you like to tease with what’s coming soon, a great way to drop a hint and keep people looking forward to something. :-)

  7. Merry Christmas, Brian. Thanks for all you’ve done for the WP community!

    Cheers,
    B

  8. Bruce says:

  10. Susan says:

Merry Christmas Brian, to you and your familiy!! God Bless!!

  11. I was just browsing a website that uses one of your themes and as I am not real familiar with blogging was doing some research. I checked out your “about me” page and just wanted to say Merry Christmas and that I appreciate your christian testimony. God Bless.

  12. I really like Streamline, good work!

Merry Christmas to you and your family – I’ll be spending mine mastering Subversion :)

  13. Mark says:

Thanks for this great Christmas present. Streamline is fantastic!

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

    Mark and Lan

  14. Matt says:

    Brian,

Thanks for all of your hard work. I tried to install the beta version but got the following error message:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class breadcrumb_navigation_xt in

Not sure if it is due to the release or error on my end.

  15. Many says:

Hi ! Nicely done, as usually. And no bugs found yet :)

Keep up the good work/fun and as the song says “God rest you merry gentleman”. The same goes to your family of course :)

  16. Joliveira says:

    It looks really good!
Congrats! … and Merry Christmas :)

  17. I like that you are working more on page templates … I still see those as the most powerful building block that help.

I will probably load up the code, just to see how you are controlling the pages.

  18. Any chance of including a blank logo file?

  19. Mark says:

    Ed,

I happen to be up with my fiance and my parents, and a laptop in front of me. (It’s 12:08 a.m. Christmas morning, Eastern time).

I created a blank version of the logo file for you:

    http://www.codecsunlimited.com/images/logo-blank.zip

Hope this is what you’re looking for. If not, let me know.

    Merry Christmas!!!

    Mark

  20. Brad says:

Hey thanks for the Christmas present. Your new template taught me a few CSS techniques I wasn’t aware of.

I like that rounded corner CSS style thingamabob and the transparency doohickey!

  21. ali says:

nice theme and looks amazing only arrow on futured articles is very strange

however lookks amazing, well done mate

  22. curious says:

Brian – I thought the theme you are using here was going to be named Streamline? I’ve been waiting for it. ;)

  23. Mark Bailey says:

A couple of things I’ve noticed (not nitpicking, I just think you want to know):

The rounded corners (main content area, modules and module headers) don’t show up for me in IE7 on Vista, but they do appear properly in FireFox. I actually like it with and without the rounded corners, but of course I know the intent was not for them to appear differently in different browsers.

Also, when I add one or more pages to my site, there is a gap between items in the menu bar in FireFox. The original two categories will appear, then a gap about half an inch wide, then the other categories appear. This doesn’t happen in IE.

Again, these are not complaints, I know little details like this are normal. This is one of the best themes I’ve seen anywhere, period.

  24. Hisham says:

You, sir, are a hero! Thank you for this theme. I will put it on my personal blog and give it a go to see how things work. Have a happy new year.

  25. Roger Cunard says:

Brian, another great theme. I’m looking forward to taking it for a spin.

  26. The 404.php file has a little typo that includes ‘l_sidebar’ and ‘r_sidebar’ (which don’t exist in the beta) so it explodes the layout. Easy fix is to simply remove the 2 includes that reference the sidebar files. The existing CSS doesn’t apply properly if you actually change the file names to the correct sidebar files.

  27. I noticed that the video page template (which I love by the way) references a custom field for “video”, but there is no code that utilizes it. I ended up just embedding the video in the posts as normal. I assume that is your intention for simplicity and that the comment is just leftover from production. (?)

I wanted to specifically comment on the excellent and highly effective layout of the Video page template. The use of offset was brilliant and the simple listing makes it clean.

Any chance that the very slick Property/Real Estate listing page template will be added to the beta as featured in the demo?

  28. What do you think about incorporating an automatic thumbnail script for the Feature page? My only exposure to an effective solution like that is the TimThumb script that I’ve seen in some other themes. Looks like it comes from http://code.google.com/p/timthumb/

  29. Hi Brian,

Achievement is glory, always successful for you, all!

  30. Paul says:

Brian, I set up this website with the new theme. I really like it. Thanks for all your time on this great theme.

    Everything worked great until:

I published a post and then deleted the hello world post. Now the home page just shows “more featured posts”

email me and I’ll let you in if you want to look around.

  31. Mark Bailey says:

I’m seeing one issue on IE7 in Vista. Steps I use to reproduce:

    1) Go to Streamline demo.
    2) In the “Page Templates” menu, choose the video page. The video page will load.
    3) Mouse over the “Page Templates” menu item again. The menu drops down and part of it is hidden behind the video.

Is anyone else seeing this too?

    Darn IE!!!

  32. Jochen says:

    Hi Brian,

Merry Christmas from me ( Jochen from Germany ).
I’am using your wonderful Lifestyle Theme on my Blog and since your Announcement i was looking for your new awesome Lifestream Theme…now its on the way in beta.

    I’ve downloaded it, but when i try to activate it ( I’am using WordPress 2.7 ) i have a blank screen…
Can you imagine what happens or better can you give me an advise, please?

    Thank you in advance, Jochen

Ps.: Sorry for my bad english…hope you understand my message

  33. For your final release, what do you think about adding a conditional excerpt to the Featured and Blog template pages so that it will only show the excerpt if available?

The page templates are the best part. I know I would purchase specialized versions of page template “packages” that could add-in to templates. For example, let’s say the Lifestyle theme and Code Blue themes each had ‘Realtor’ or ‘Consultant’ (or even band…’Band’) page templates that could be purchased as add-ins to the themes.

I’d love to see your take on a band/solo performer theme. I’m a huge live music nut and I see some terrible band websites that could use an easy theme to pop into WP.

I’m a raving fan of this theme. You always have impressed, but I think Streamline is in a class of its own. Nearly a perfect blend of best-practice blog format and CMS features.

  34. Polle says:

This Chrome theme looks great, will use it one chrometweaks.nl can see it work in less hightech surroundings with some easy image modifications / tweaks and plug ins as well! Happy new year!

  35. Paul says:

I like it :) BUT seriously dude- working all the time won’t make Brian a happy camper.

  36. I changed the zip file name and I still get Lifestyle_2.0. An intriguing demo online but no luck actually installing Streamline.

  37. Try the download link now, I forgot to change it!

  38. Sounds good so far! :)

  39. Same to you Don, many thanks!

  40. Thanks Jack – and Merry Christmas to you as well!

  41. Thanks Wade, it is my pleasure to share that, and glad you made your way over here!

  42. Thanks Susan – you too, and thanks for being a loyal supporter of me and my business!

  43. It’s on the Revolution Two site – and thanks!

  44. Sure thing Bruce, thanks and Merry Christmas to you as well!

  45. My pleasure Brian, working with WordPress is more fun than it is work!

  46. Thanks Dan – been a fun year, and for you as well I bet. Cheers to 2009, and hope than you and Jennifer have an even better year!

  47. Nothing wrong with agreeing with Thomas, thanks!

  48. Absolutely Brian, it’s been an amazing year for us too! And now we begin year 3 for Ask Dan and Jennifer.

Merry Christmas, and let’s all have an awesome 2009!

  49. Disable the Breadcrumb Navigation plugin first!

  50. Bleh, I meant to do that one, I can do it when the 1.0 version comes out – in the meantime, check your email.

  51. Sounds good Jonathan, I’ll be trying my best to include more page templates as time goes on.

  52. Thanks, and to you as well!

  53. Thanks – and glad to hear that you haven’t found any bugs yet!

  54. Thanks so much Mark!

  55. I already beat you to the punch and emailed him one….. BUT MAN, THAT IS KILLER THAT YOU CARED ENOUGH TO DO THIS!

  56. Mark says:

Aw, sorry I was too slow. :-) I was glad to do it, though. Lots of people in the Revolution forums have taken the time to answer questions and do things for me, so I’m trying to do the same.

This is a great theme. Thanks for making it available.

  57. Thanks, Brian and Mark. I’ll add you guys to the production credits of the new project. ;)

  58. My theme here was a modified version of the Streamline theme – I don’t think I ever said I was going to release it…

  59. Thanks Mark – hey, can you show me where the navbar thing is happening? I can’t envision what you are trying to explain.

  60. Mark Bailey says:

    Hi Brian,

    I’ll e-mail you a screenshot.

At the moment you can also see the issue live at:

    http://www.codecsunlimited.com/newsite

(Ignore the disarray there, it’s just a test site at the moment.)

    Best regards,

    Mark

  61. Thanks so much Michael – good catch, I have already addresses this in my local theme file.

  62. Thanks Mark – see email I sent back to you!

  63. Good deal Roger – shoot me a link when you have something done!

  64. Mark Bailey says:

For all wondering, it was user error on my part…something I had coded without remembering it, that added the extra padding.

Menu bug report withdrawn. :-) Sorry for wasting anyone’s time on that.

  65. Michael – the Property pages are done using post templates and not a page template – I figured that realtors would find it easy to create a “Listing” category and then each time they posted a listing, their post would automatically form. In your theme folder, you either have a single-cat-1.php file or single-cat-x.php file – all you need to do is replace the 1 or x with the category ID of the listing, and then it will work.

  66. I really don’t like to include all kinds of third party apps in my themes – I’ve created the layout of Streamline to work well with a large image being uploaded, and then when you do that, the WP image uploader automatically creates thumbnails that fit perfectly into the spots.

  67. Mark Bailey says:

To clarify, any dropdown menu has the same problem, not just the video menu. I was just using that as an example to reproduce. Looks like an IE z-index issue?

  68. OC says:

How does this “thumbnail” functionality work with this Streamline theme?

What I am doing is uploading a 550×330 image and use it for the actual post (it fits all across the top of the post column) and I use the same image for the ‘featured content’ plugin with the custom field function.

So, if I understand correctly, WordPress should create a thumbnail that will be displayed properly in the ‘thumbnail’ custom field for the “More Featured Posts’ field and the rest of the thumbnails used with, say, the Featured template page, etc?

Because if that should be the case, then it is not working for me.

It seems like if I want a square thumbnail to be displayed along with the excerpt and title under the ‘More Featured Posts’ I always have to create an actual thumbnail image at the right size.

If i don’t create the thumbnail and add it as a custom field image, then all I get is the generic R with gray background thumbnail.
