Spinning My Wheels

14

Ever sit in bed and mess around on the internet for two hours? I just did.

Spent some time tweaking my site, but then reverted back to the way it is now. Spent more time playing around with my fantasy baseball roster. Then I spent even more time checking out some of my favorite blogs.

Didn’t get one bit of work done tonight. I guess everyone’s entitled to a night off, right? Back to surfing the net…

Oh, people work on these machines??

  2. Armen says:

I noticed you were tweaking…I was getting upset. “What’s he up to now?!”

  3. Yes, Jennifer, at times people work on these things! Armen, I was actually using my site to test some things out for another upcoming theme - no worries! :)

I do that all the time. You sit down, prepared to work on something specific, then a headline, a photo or something else catches your eye.

Pretty soon you’re off to the mysterious black hole of http://www.wastingmytime.com and before you know it, half the night is gone, nothing gets accomplished, the guilt piles up and you chalk it up to “relaxation”.

It’s like channel surfing with a laptop - you never really watch anything, but you certainly know what’s on…every channel.

  5. Char says:

Well, it all depends on your definition of work. Sounds to me like you were doing research and development!;-)

  6. Chris, yes, in fact last night I was double surfing then - in bed with my laptop surfing the net, as well as channel flipping. Guess I was multi tasking! Char, thanks for somehow finding the silver lining in the clouds… although I’m pretty sure I was just wasting time goofing around. I like it though…

This is a very common occurrence for me, usually followed by some guilt (as Chris mentions). My time-wasting activities range from researching the latest green tea benefits, to messing with musical instruments, to whatever else I can find that isn’t work-related. I think it’s important to have that downtime every now and then to recharge your brain, just as long as you don’t let it cut too much into your work.

  8. Well last night, it pretty much took over my work, which as you say Rob, is ok. Sometimes I need night offs, so I guess I shouldn’t feel guilty, right?

  9. It’s called mental therapy. We work at the computer so hard during the day, you have to take time off and use the computer for fun occasionally. If not, the computer becomes your cubicle and that excitement you once felt when sitting down before the screen slowly vanishes.

After a long day of chasing stories and talking about tech, I grab the latest Tiger Woods and play a round or two. As the weather gets better, I try to spend more evenings outdoors — you do remember outdoors? ;)

  10. thats all part of working online.. just as long as you dont do it to often it is a nice break! :)

  11. Rob says:

Brian, exactly! You shouldn’t feel guilty for giving your brain a rest, just as you shouldn’t feel guilty for giving your body a rest by sleeping at night. Easier said than done, though :-)

  12. Do what I do - leave your cell phone on and answer a gazillion phone calls. That’ll stop relaxation or productivity dead in its tracks!

I have to say, that I could not agree with you in 100% regarding ing My Wheels : Brian Gardner, but it’s just my opinion, which could be wrong :)
