Revolution for Bloggers

I wanted to see if there would be any interest if I choose to offer a 3rd option for the Revolution theme, which would basically be a simplified theme version just for bloggers. The layout/design would be similar to the Single Page.

I realize that some people might want to use the theme just for blogging, and don’t want to spend $59.95 for the enhanced CMS version. My guess is that the blog package would be something like $19.95.

Chime in and let me know what you think!

Have you given any thought at all to offering a “free version” of Revolution (I mean a stripped down basic blog)? My thoughts would see the advantage similar to that of offering free themes in the first place, as a way to generate interest in custom work. Folks might use the free version as a way to “try before you buy” and taste test the goods, which might leave them wanting a bit more, then opting for a “premium” version.

I’m not trying to diminish the hard work and effort that went into Revolution, but WP users are so accustomed to “free”, they may be a little hesitant to plunk down even a few bucks, and I don’t know what kind of response you’re seeing, but it might seem logical to offer something like this to wet the appetite so to speak.

I meant to make this suggestion, but you preempted me a bit. :)

  2. Chris, it’s great to have people like you who leave honest comments – I really do appreciate your feedback. I do see your point, and think it is really valid. One thing I was hoping to avoid was saturating the internet with the theme – although the CMS is more for websites, and the blog theme would be for bloggers. (two different crowds.)

The other thing is that when you release a theme, there is a fair degree of support it should require, and I get TONS of emails asking how to do things with my current themes. I’m a nice guy and all, but it gets to a point where I don’t have the ability to spend 1-2 hours a day helping people out without being compensated.

I’ve done that for almost a year now, and can promise you that I’ve spent hundreds of hours doing things for people without being paid.

    It gets tiring at times.

$20 is a bargain for such a great theme.

Great designers, like you Brian, should get compensated fairly for your work.

You’ve made an incredible contribution already to the WordPress theme community …

For some weird reason, I totally spaced on that aspect of it (duh!).

I’ve got some themes done myself and have held back releasing them, because of that exact reason, weighing the benefits of time vs. energy and knowing when to say “when” and placing a value on your own time.

You’ve made a tremendous impact on the WP community and inspired a lot of others, myself included. I say, trust your instincts on this, they’ve been pretty good to this point.

  5. Chris – feel free to shoot me links to the themes – I’d love to take a look at them, to see what you’ve done!

$20 is about right. I ran a poll on theme pricing several months ago and 20 bucks was the popular pick.

I’m a happy (paid) user of Revolution theme. I think for some of my other projects that a simple theme from Revolution will be great.
Just for what price for a guy who has soon paid $59.95 ? ;-)

  8. Yes, free and simple version just for bloggers would be great, but then there will be too many bloggers with similar layout. 20 USD is ok for me, i would buy it. 60 USD is too much just for the blog theme cuz there so many out there, but for more serious project – why not. I am just wondering why in 60 USD version there are no Recent Comments list?!

  9. And Brian, this theme for your own blog is much better than Revolution. Maybe want to sell this one?

@ “your own blog is much better than Revolution”

    Yes I agree.

BTW, can i take out the magnifier icon beside the search bar? If this has been discussed before please point me to it.

    Thanks!

I would definitely pay 20.00 for it, esp giving the level of support and help for customizations you provide for your themes.

I am actually considering whether I might have use for the full version of revolution. Right now I have only a simple blog, but I contribute heavily to a few other sites because they are more than a blog and can accommodate the maps and files I put up.

The full revolution also looks like it would be easier to maintain several blogs in one place by using several single pages, but I am not sure that is the intended use.

I’ll have to give some real thought to how I might make good use of this. I may have to follow the progress of other people using the theme to see how it can be used…. I’m not sure I am that patient, though!!!

One technical question about Revolution. As you can see from my site, one of the first things I want with any theme is the ability to have not only 3 columns, but be able to have a third side bar or text area over both of the 2 normal side bars. This has been a “deal breaker” with a couple of themes I was interested in using. For my blog, I feel that section is very important.

I started to do it with one of your other themes and it worked, but I had problems getting images and borders perfect and have not spent too much time on it..

Would this be possible to do with Revolution?

  13. Bill says:

Darn. I bought Revolution to soon. $20 vs $60. Exspensive featured page.

Hi Brian, I am a paying owner of your template and I Love what I have been able to do so far, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to run it as just a blog running from my index file I have seen it in action at http://freelancefolder.com , and drumsofthought.com but still have no clue how it is done.

I plan on using this same theme on a couple of my subdomains and a blog is all I need for one of them, any advice?
