Revolution Blog Theme Now Available

Revolution Blog ThemeI just wanted to make a quick announcement that the Revolution Blog Theme has been officially released. You can download it on the theme’s official download page.

I am hoping at some point soon to release the two column version, as well as hopefully a variety of colors that can be changed using just a different stylesheet. Enjoy the theme!

    Sure thing Joe, always love seeing my work on other sites, and how great people customize them!

    Hi Brian - My first impression is that this is the coolest freebie theme on the market. I was just reading your site last night but you didn’t release it yet. This morning, there it was. I will be using it on my blog and will give a link in due course. Big thanks for your time and efforts, it is very much appreciated! I like your senses of style, color and detail.

    One follow-up question Brian, What is the max width of an image that can be place in the blog?

    (Sorry to mention this, but I remember using your Velocity theme and it would throw the sidebars out of kilter if the image was just 1px too wide).

    Thanks again.

    Brian, The icons for “categories” are not displaying in the downloaded theme. As I recall, someone else mentioned this in earlier feedback and you said you fixed it?

    To answer my earlier question, I noticed that the image size should be 500px, but it doesn’t matter if it is bigger, you have it set so it will auto resize and not screw up the sidebars. (but images will lose their sharpness, so best to resize images to 500px)

    I also noticed that if you set an image to be posted to medium size (300px) and if no text follows it, the post merges with previous post. I don’t think this is your theme problem, I’ve seen it happen on other themes as well. Maybe its a WP thing. (I found this out accidentally, I never really use the medium size option)

    Lastly, I prefer the text line spacing to be just a little bit closer together. I think this will be better for longer articles. Hope this helps - Sorry if it sounds like I am being too critical.

    Marc - the content area is 500px wide, so don’t go any more than that. As for the categories issue, I’m trying to figure out when using widgets, why there is a numerical id attached - it’s unique, which is why the icons aren’t showing.

    Paula, many thanks - love your support!

    And a special note to all - I’ve included the split version of the theme on the download page. Now you can have a left sidebar, a right sidebar and the main content in the middle.

    Hello Brian!

    Good luck, thank for you theme

  10. April 22nd, 2008 at 8:35 am

    Hello Brian,
    It was a very good choice of layout with sidebar left/right.
    I will use it in my new project.
    Thanks!

  11. April 22nd, 2008 at 9:49 am

    Paulo - thanks, I just added that this morning, and am glad to have gotten the feedback asking me to include it!

  12. April 22nd, 2008 at 3:31 pm

    Brian - this is a great simplification and reinvention of the whole Revolution theme - thanks. Speaking as someone who is playing with the whole Revolution developer package I can say this is as good as some of the premium themes, and for some purposes may be better.

    I’m looking forward to your video theme(s) and wondering whether you like the popup players (like Jason Schuller’s at WPElements.com) or if you prefer videos playing in place on the page like those at ShowInABox.tv?

    What do you think?

    Hi Brian,
    I love this theme and I really appreciate your efforts. I had a question about the header- how can I change the color of the header (the rest of the header) so that it will match a different logo?
    thanks!!!

  14. April 23rd, 2008 at 3:03 am

    Thanks so much for your free theme, i download it already.

    I like yr themes. look nice and smart.

    i’m downloading it now

    Hi Brian,

    The included readme file refers to License Agreement and links to the FAQ where the terms & conditions for the premium (=paid) versions are discussed.
    So, what is the license for this one?

    Another thing: did you consider adding an empty “logo.gif” file, i.e. without text?

  17. April 23rd, 2008 at 8:47 am

    Brian,

    This theme is now the default for my website. Thank you kindly.

    […] Secondly, Brian Gardner has released another addition to the Revolution series, however this one is free. Pretty clean and matches the quality of the others - it comes in two and three column formats too. You can see the blog post about it here. […]

    Would love to see this theme in additional colors.

    I plan on transferring the 2 blogs below to Wordpress, and I’m looking for 2 themes. One is a Chicago blog, and the other is a entreprenuer blog. (both currently are blogger blogs)

    This is a great theme, Brian. I already changed the colors to go with the look of a new site I’m creating, and I’m really happy with it.

    Bob - I used photoshop to change the colors. Play around with the gradient tool with the color of your choosing until you find something that fits.

    On the other hand, you could wait until Brian comes out with some different colors to choose from.

    Brian,

    I can’t quite pinpoint it, but there’s a formatting issue somewhere in the code. Look at this post for example:

    http://ronaldlewis.com/2008/04/23/dataportability-new-logo-based-on-draft-submission/

    Nothing’s coming to mind just yet, but wanted to make you aware of this.

    (Note: The only formatting in the above post is ..)

  22. April 23rd, 2008 at 6:02 pm

    RL,
    almost commented on your site but I don’t do captchas. They are annoying.

    Clear your floated images!

  23. April 23rd, 2008 at 6:15 pm

    Love the theme and always link back however can I just have one link back in footer not both (the theme name and link to your site?0 If so what one would you prefer being the actual link?

  24. April 23rd, 2008 at 7:33 pm

    Hey all, thanks for the comments - really appreciate the feedback.

    Moshu, I’ve added a blank logo in the theme’s images folder - don’t know how I missed that, as I’ve always done that in the past.

    Tery, sure, you can modify the linkbacks if you want - I have no issues with that.

    Ronald, it looks to me that the issue is with the images floating left - those can be cleared through the stylesheet. Just remove the float: left; line of code where the #contentleft p img is defined!

  25. April 23rd, 2008 at 8:26 pm

    Sweet… off to play around and convert to a red theme (our art studios colors) thanks

  26. April 24th, 2008 at 7:35 am

    Thanks, Brian.

    Removing the image float corrected the issue. Not being a huge user of CSS, this wasn’t apparent to me. Thanks again!

    Just an update to this post/comments, that I have just released the 2 column version to the theme!

  28. April 24th, 2008 at 9:43 am

    Thanks a lot. Nothing better than finding free high quality themes to share with all!

    Thank you for your great job!

    Really great theme I love it, I was looking for a theme where I could get a banner on top. This one is just perfect. Thank you.

  32. April 27th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

    Brian, I have been using your Redbook theme on my blog and am interested in your new Revolution theme. My question is how do I get my blog title into the theme header? When I change to the theme the title shows: Revolution. I am a blogger, not a programmer so quite clueless in this matter. Also, what goes into the green box in the header? Thanks, nice themes.

  33. April 28th, 2008 at 1:32 am

    Hi Brian,
    Great theme! I dont know if it is an issue with the search box in the left column or a pic size, but the right column is pushed clear to the bottom of the page.
    Other than my newbie mistakes this is an awesome theme!

    Thanks Brian, I’ve modified it to make a green version:

    I’m using the Easy Avatars plugin and had trouble getting gravatars to line up with comments. Does the theme have gravatar support built in, I couldn’t see it?

  36. April 29th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

    Brian,
    I fixed my issues with the search box. Now I just have to figure out how these people are changing the colors :)
    Thank you once again for the the best free theme available.

    @Michael

    Hello,

    In order to add support WP 2.5 gravatars support (don’t need a plug in for that it’s hardcoded in WP25) :

    1) in comment.php add after :
    [div class=”commenttext”]

    this line
    [?php echo get_avatar( get_comment_author_email(), ‘40′ ) ?]

    2) and in style.css add line 698 (for easy reading)

    .commenttext img.avatar {
    float: left;
    margin-right: 10px;
    border: none;
    display:inline;
    }

    Hope this helps

    Hi Brian - I was looking for a theme to use on a new financial blog and have picked Rev Blog. One suggestion: rather than a great expanse of white, how about a border, ala this page?

  42. May 12th, 2008 at 8:07 am

    Luc, thanks for posting that information. It worked, although I finished up sticking with the plugin once I got the style formatted.
