Re-Releasing Free WordPress Themes

Brian Gardner Free WordPress ThemesOver the past six months I have spent a lot of time developing and supporting my Revolution themes. Even though it’s been a really fun and interesting period of time, I haven’t forgotten about those of you who use my free WordPress themes.

Throughout the next few weeks, I will be re-releasing my free themes – primarily the ones that have been the most popular. I have learned a lot throughout the course of Revolution, and would like to update the code on all of the free themes that I have made available to the public.

I want to make sure that all of these themes will validate and be XHTML compliant, as well as ensure that all of the themes will be Widget ready. Here’s a list of the free themes that I will go through and update the code on:

  • Blue Zinfandel
  • Downtown Java
  • Dropshadow
  • Silhouette
  • Tapestry
  • Vertigo
  • Whitespace

As part of this process, I will also be updating the way that my WordPress themes page looks, and updating the demo site as well. Oh, and by the way, this also means that there will be a few more free WordPress themes coming – I already have one in the works, and have ideas on a few others.

    Brian,

    You are the BEST!

It’s this dedication to “quality” that sets you apart from the rest!!!

    K~

  2. David says:

Great news! I have been using Whitespace for a couple of blogs and I am thrilled that you will be re-releasing it.

    - David

  3. Paul says:

Awesome. I’ll be using Whitespace on some of my blogs in the future and I’m looking forward to the re-release :)

  4. Sander says:

I rediscoverd whitespace recently! I found out it rocks, thanks for updating the free wordpress themes!

  5. Kip says:

Looking forward to the Blue Zinfadel re-release. The only problem I had with it was that bullet points don’t work in the posts. That’s both when using the automatic wordpress dashboard bullet point feature and when I manually enter the code.

If you already figure out how to fix this problem, let me know.

  6. Wonderful news, Brian – thanks for the update and continued support of your free themes.

  7. Pete Lacis says:

Any fixes for why Blue Zinfindel will drop out of selection in WordPress and, as a result, WP will display the default WP theme? Happens once every week or so.

  8. James says:

When will the blue zin be ready?

  9. James says:

And, will the 3 Col be Fluid now?

    Thanks

  10. Tried getting hold of you via your contact page but there was no link available. I would like to ask you directly about commercial use of your Blue Zinfandel theme. Please, if you would, drop me a note when you get a chance at renmeleon@gmail.com Thank you! Beautiful work, I am looking forward to exploring more of your themes.

I can’t wait to see the updated themes and new themes! I think it may be time for me to switch to one of yours.

  15. Jack Kennard says:

Does this upgrade coincide with WordPress2.5 ?

  16. Susan says:

Wow Brian, that is really kind and generous of you to do!!

  17. m says:

    woo hoo! good news.

  18. Don Sturgill says:

Good call, Brian. Roadturn is ready for a change and I would like to see all of my blogs running a Brian Gardner theme. Get that coffee ready, I’m coming…

  19. Tom says:

Cool! Hey, Brian – could you please include support for tags when you redo these themes (especially Silhouette 3-col!!)? I’m sure there are ways to hack the theme myself but I haven’t found any working advice for it.

  20. Luke says:

Hey Brian– Love your stuff. Thanks a lot for sharing it.

I’m having a problem with a Whitespace installation on WPMu… seems when I go to widgets, my sidebars loose their link to the stylesheet. Why is that?

I’ve looked all over for an answer to this, and thought I’d drop something here… thanks!

  21. Scott says:

    Great themes Brian.

When will the Dropshadow be done do you have any idea? I would like to use it on a new blog.

    Thanks,
    Scott

  22. Noah says:

    Hey Brian-

Thanks so much for going through and keeping these free themes up to date!

I think I just found a bug in Tapestry’s CSS that I want you to be aware of when you get to it:

On a page with multiple posts, if a post’s categories extend to more than one line, it messes with the formatting of a longer post title below it. Adding a ‘clear: both;’ to the h1 CSS seems to take care of the issue.

    Thanks again!

    -Noah

  23. Jeff W says:

    Hey Brian,
I’m absolutely loving your silhouette 3 column theme. I know just enough about CSS & HTML to be dangerous.

So far, you’ve made things very easy! I was able to easily change search results to “excerpt” for example.

One bummer, though. My search box has a “search button” under it and the words “Search For:” (in black on black) above it. How do I fix that?

    Thanks!
    Jeff
