Music to My Ears

Music to My EarsOver the past few weeks, I have upgraded most of the Revolution themes to version 3.0 - for the most part, those changes included backend code, gravatars in the comments, more flexibility with the theme options page and a few other things. I wanted the existing themes to be updated before I moved forward with new ones, especially since I had some neat ideas I wanted to explore.

I’d like to show you a new concept that will be incorporated into the Revolution line - something that I’ve wanted for quite some time, and finally got around to working with. Take a look at the Revolution Music theme that I am currently working on, and you’ll see…

I’ve been asked many times if I can incorporate the Featured Content plugin - one that rotates images and stories on the homepage. I must admit, that seeing sites such as Quarterlives and Millers Sisters Cafe, which are built on the Revolution Pro Media theme and using the plugin, just looked way too cool to ignore this feature.

So I will now incorporate the Featured Content plugin into my themes. For those of you who are currently using a Revolution theme that has the tabber feature - I’ll be writing up a tutorial on how to replace the tabber feature with this plugin, as I’m sure that will be a popular request!

For you legal eagles out there, don’t worry - I’ve already been given permission from Jason Schuller and Jonathan Schemoul, who’s plugin and original javascript code respectively is being used.

Lastly, I just wanted to say that I’ll be “out of the office” from Thursday August 7th until Sunday August 10th. I had nothing planned this weekend, so I decided to take a little walk through the Chicagoland area. If I don’t respond to your email or comment, that is why!

BG, your work just keeps getting better … can’t wait to hang out at WordCamp in San Francisco next week with you!

  2. Likewise, Cory… competition is always a good thing, and usually results in innovation, and a much better product offering across the market. I’m very excited about WordCamp, and can’t wait to paint the town with you and Nathan!

  3. Ryan says:

    Ditto Cory (minus the WordCamp).

BG I always get excited when I see a post from you in my feed reader… “I wonder what cool news Brian has for us today” is often what I think. I’m never disappointed. Keep up the great work!

  4. Ryan, thanks so much - I honestly wish I had more time to blog, but Revolution really keeps me pretty busy. But I aim to please, so that’s my main goal!

  5. Remkus says:

Like I said on twitter: looks very nice, sort of masculine, rough.. I like the subtle touches a lot like you did on the commentbox. Very nice!

  6. Remkus, thanks. I try to bring in different elements with each theme, to help diversify them.

  7. Brian, Opting for “Featured Content” over the tabber is another stroke of genius - plus its a twofer. Not only is the plug-in prettier, but it is more apt to get the reader to see all the featured articles available.

  8. Ed, my thoughts exactly. I’m still going to leave the code in the themes for the tabber, on the chance that people prefer that over the Featured Content plugin. Basically giving them the option to use either or.

  9. WordSkill says:

Good decision, thanks for continuing to push Revolution to new levels.

  10. My pleasure - always want to keep pushing!

  11. Tracy says:

    Outstanding work, Brian!

  12. Hey Tracy - thanks for that, glad you like it!

  13. Brad Potter says:

Looks really nice Brian. The new theme and the plug-in add great value. Best of luck on your walk.

    Can’t wait to get it!

  15. MadameSoybean says:

I second reb’s comment. She and I will be fighting to be first in line when Revolution Music is released. I cannot wait! It’s what I’ve been looking for…your designs are always fashion forward.

  16. Tammy Lenski says:

Brian, echoing others, I love that this feature will be integrated!

Will it be possible to modify the plugin so that instead of featured content automatically rotating, we can elect to rotate a latest blog posts (without manually changing the featured content each time we blog)?

  17. Shankar says:

Brian, keep up the good work…happy to see other WP-experts joining in. I think Revolution set the ball rolling for professional paid themes, and now Cory & team at iThemes are doing very well too, for example their ECommerce and Photo Themes are a bold step. Are you thinking about extending R-theme into making it a fully functional digital store? Your users like are doing this mix-and-match at our end…you could cover more ground, and I sure there will be takers for it.
