*&%$#$#@ I Did It Again

Ok folks, there’s no other way to say this – while goofing around with an upcoming site redesign, I accidentally uploaded theme files to the theme I had live on this site. So… for now, I’ve activated my Core Blog theme, just to have something somewhat presentable.

Guess that means I’ll be focusing on getting the site redesign done, eh?

Accidents happen. More than once.

Comments

  1. I have done this more times than I care to disclose so I definitely understand. But as you said, great motivation to get your redesign done :D

  2. Kevin says:

Guess I need to keep digging for those files we talked about :)

  3. Guilty. I started chmod’ing my main theme(s) so it doesn’t happen again. I lose the ability to do on the fly edits in the WP editor, but I also can’t totally wreck things on accident.

At least you have a complete back-up plan!

  4. Kevin says:

Caffeine… LOL!! Done it a gazillion times, of course I am an amateur so it is encouraging to see it can happen to the best! No biggie, it will be fun to see what comes out of it Brian.

  5. My FTP program is perfectly suited for doing this – everything looks exactly the same except for the tab you’re at. I’ve overwritten so many things that I’ve started renaming things to .bak files and leaving them in, just in case. Kinda sad I expect myself to screw up.

    • Yeah, it’s getting to the point Kris where I need to do the same. Good thing I know a guy who develops WordPress themes and had some on hand. :-)

  6. Mehmet says:

Most of the hosting companies these days offering a backup/recovery solution for last x (usually 7) days. The easiest one is to use R1Soft over cPanel if your host have that tool installed. If not, i am sure you can get in contact and specify a path to your hosting provider for recovery

  7. Ian says:

I use Coda to edit my sites. It has a plug-in to do backups for situations like this. But no backup solution can outsmart my own trickery. I have had this happen too. I just try to use a local site, and never have my main site open, but it just seems inevitable sometimes.

  8. Susan says:

Brian, I can hear your frustration, and I am glad to know even the best of the best do it too! I can’t count how many times I am working on a theme for one blog and upload it to another blog and then create more work for myself LOL (may not be exactly the same thing but…) Live and learn, and learn by experience am I right?

  9. reb says:

hey, at least now you know Core looks great, is fully functional…and will be easy to modify ;-) I vote you tweak this theme and show us just how awesome it can look!

  10. Brian – do you have this core theme available for download or on StudioPress?

  11. Wendy Daunheimer says:

It’s a relief to see that the great ones make mistakes, too! :)

  12. Rob says:

I’d suggest downloading a new theme from this outfit called StudioPress. Very nice stuff there. :-)

  13. Russ Pond says:

Same here. I like this core blog theme. Very clean and well organized.

  14. Steve says:

My sympathies Brian. Been there, done that.
It’s like the powers that be think we don’t have enough to do, right?

    You’ll get’er done no doubt.

    Have a great one.

  15. Jarno says:

Sorry for what happened. I have done the same a couple of times and feel the pain.

Would you like to write about how you ususally develop the themes? I mean the methods. What are the programs you use? Do you do the design first and then split it into HTML and integrate with Wordpress PHP afer that or what? I would like to know how your typical process goes.

  16. I feel your pain – last week actually! ;)

I was modifying the default theme, and didn’t both to change the name – then upgraded!! AAAAggg.

Good luck with this redesign. :)

  17. Howie Hanson says:

    Excited for the News theme.

  18. Chris says:

Oh, I can feel the pain, happens to me all the time. I just email my hoster and ask him to send me the latest backup (most of the time just a few hours old) and then I upload the backup. I should know better now, but as long as it is so convenient, I won’t change :)
