How to Use the Revolution City Theme

How to Use the Revolution City ThemeA little over a week ago I released the Revolution City theme - something that I was very happy about, since I had been asked numerous times to release a geo-type theme.

Well so far the feedback has been really positive, but I initially thought that developers would feel limited to using it ONLY for city or community type websites.

Then I received an email from a friend of mine named Rebecca - who incidentally is using the original Revolution theme for her own site. She contacted me to ask that the site she recently designed be included in the Revolution showcase.

From her email:

Woohoo…City theme up and running at Ginny Owens’ website - and she is so happy with it! Thanks for another great theme to work with :D

Then I clicked the link to Ginny Owens’ website, and nearly fell out of my chair. I could not believe what Rebecca had done with the City theme - she totally molded it into a beautiful piece of art!

So from now on, I won’t ever limit my thinking on what Revolution can do. I am continually amazed at the quality of sites that use Revolution as a base, and look forward to seeing many more to come!

Well done Rebecca!

The great thing about the Revolution series is that they all serve as a solid foundation for talented designers. It’s like the old saying that a house has ‘good bones’ — in other words, it is solidly built. That’s the way it is with Rev, it has ‘good bones.’

Glad to hear you think that Rev has good bones - I’m hoping that others continue to see the same thing, especially when the showcase serves as a way to help convince people!

** I DID fall out of my chair! **

That looks great, and it’s completely different from the original look of the City theme. When I have the money, I want to invest in the big package and turn a really good idea into an amazing site.

    Anyway, catch you all later!

    Thanks

Yes, it’s hard to believe how unrecognizable the site is from the original. Rebecca did a fantastic job!

That is fantastic! What a great job Rebecca did indeed. That is my goal to learn and make it look original. The basic is there and Brian, I can’t be more pleased with my first purchase. You can bet I will be shouting out about Revolution Themes!

Brian, your themes are totally the best! It makes it really easy to play with…

I hope you reach your goal and I LOVE what you are doing with the tabber area! I am checking your site daily to see the progress you are making! ;)

No need to feel flattered, just be proud!

Another potential recognized name that might go Revolution is the popular 80’s rockband Queensryche!

  9. July 8th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

    Brian, that’s Awesome.
I do remember Queensryche very well.
I used to have an LP of them in late 80’s.

Also work’s well as a quarterly newsletter site for a trade association! In progress, but coming along very quickly!

    OT, But Important

Archives: You need to provide archives of past blog posts. Help with your WhiteSpace theme would be nice. BTW, no footer. Aren’t themes supposed to have a footer?

Feedburner: Went to the FeedBurner site and tried burning a feed for my blog. Neither the blog URL or the feed URL worked. In short, your theme is not compatible with FeedBurner

    Brain,

I know your contact page says you are busy, but can you please email me?

    Thanks and God Bless!!

Hey! I think your themes are awesome. And tomorrow I will purchase Rev City for my web-magazine. Thanks for your work!

Are you sure you entered the correct Feedburner url? As you can see, the Revolution site has Feedburner set up.

    Daria
Great news, shoot me an email and I’ll give you the 25% repeat customer discount code!

Looking good so far, well done!

  16. July 10th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

I should have specified, I was talking about your WhiteSpace theme. Since I can’t find your archives I couldn’t place the comment where it belonged. Since you’ve closed off email, and don’t provide a forum for old stuff, I chose a forum that has something to do with themes.

BTW, I just got a copy of HTML Tidy and I’ll be using that to see about repairing files.

Hey Brian, great work on the themes.
However I am wondering if there is the possibility to divide the dropdown html menu’s in seperate columns when it exceeds the screen width. Because now i’m unable to navigate because the browser(s) don’t automatically scroll down the menu.
What are your thoughts about this?

Also it might be recommendable to not fill the text field in the options/admin panel panel for the theme. In my case I ‘forgot’ to fill in a advertisment or adsense ID and it resulted on 404 outbound links on all my pages. Something Google (euhhrr, visitors ) is not very fond of :-). Solution was to either put an advertisment code or remove the field from the theme manually.

They are going to be playing here in Puerto Rico - Queensryche! that is - so will be interesting to see their Revolution theme

  19. July 11th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

As a web designer I’m very picky about the themes I use. I just had to let you know that I really enjoy your designs and the functionality of your themes. Revolution City is my absolute favorite so far!

  20. July 11th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Brian - just want to say, what a really fabulous theme Rev. City is.. another classic. I recently did a pretty heavy mod on your Rev.Magazine theme for a client of mine. They haven’t launched it yet, otherwise I’d link it for you - - but I have to it is a really solid base to work with. Normally, I don’t prefer it when clients want me to work with an existing theme… sometimes it’s hard to work inside someone elses code, ya know?

But Revolution was really a dream to work with Brian - keep doing what ya do!

No problem, I sent you an emailed response

    Martijn
I’m a little unsure what you are saying about the drop-downs, can you be more specific?

    BW
Cool stuff - amazing how these guys (as are other 80’s rock bands) are still playing!

    Kathy
Now you know how to make a guy feel special! Thanks for your comment - you made my day!

    Lisa
Well, can’t really say much other than I am speechless - from your donation, to including my Vertigo theme in your revision of WordPress for Dummies to the comment you just left, I must say that I’m feeling pretty humbled and really appreciate what you said. If you want, (or can) drop me an email at bmg1227 / at / hotmail / dot / com with the link, so I can see the site when it’s done!

    @Brian

for example, Gerards site, or even mine with low resolutions.
im using 1400*1050, firefox 2&3, and when going to http://www.narms.com/narmstoday/ you can see the author menu but you are unable to scroll down (its too long for the resolution and it doesnt scroll down automatically, thus you are unable to click on some of the items in that dropdown menu. I think splitting the menu in multiple columns (i dont know how though ;-) ) solves the problem

  23. July 13th, 2008 at 8:42 am

    @martijn

The http://www.narms.com/narmstoday site is still in development… I hate the long menu as well and will be hacking something to get that working in some other fashion..not sure what yet, but that menu off the bottom can’t happen…

  24. July 13th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

@gerard let me know what you’d change/hack to make it work, because i’m experiencing the same problem ;-)

  25. July 13th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Gerard - what I would suggest is to exclude the authors category from the navbar, and then just create a page that has the authors/links listed on them.

  26. July 13th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

@Brian Thought about that and that is what I will do in the interim… BUT, long term, looking at the in header.php and wp-admin category.php and category-template.php to see if I can’t make the child of a child pop to the side as a hierarchical menu… got to be a way….

  27. July 14th, 2008 at 11:33 am

Wow Brian, that is a great theme. I am very impressed!!! Keep up with the good work

  28. July 14th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

    Hi Brian

I have something extremely important for Adsense Publishers regarding themes where the Adsense Ad Block is labelled “Related Links”

I have just confirmed with Adsense support that this label is actually in conflict with their program policies… Here is their response.
Thank you for your note and for bringing this to our attention. You are correct, ads should only be labeled either “sponsored links” or “advertisements”, not “related links,” as this may be deceiving to users.

So anyone using that label above their Adsense Ads MUST correct it :)

    Cheers
    Stephen Spry

Is that a plugin that links posts to authors on the dedicated page that you’re suggesting, Brian?

Gerard, what would I need to do to create rotating ads like you’ve done under the news & updates?

  30. July 15th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Brian! Finally I bought RCity and I really really adore u. There are still some things to change. But my site looks fantastic. Thank u for what u are doing. People need it! xoxo

  31. July 17th, 2008 at 5:29 am

This site is surprisingly cool looking:) I love the way it’s done and it shows that Revolution is not that bad at all:)

  32. August 19th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Love the theme and using it.

Is it in your theme or in WP if I want to turn off feedburner right now as an option when they enter their email address?

    Thanks
