Choose Your Own Adventure

9

Does anyone remember those books years ago, where you could choose your own adventure? You know, the ones at the bottom where it would say something like “To follow the scary creature into the cave, go to page 32″ or “To avoid the scary creature by jumping into a pit of fierce snakes, go to page 44″…

Anyway, I was thinking about them on my drive in to work this morning, and a light bulb went on. Using (sort of) this concept, I wanted to open up my web design/blog tips section with offering this chance for you to “choose your own” content for the tips and resources section of my site.

Basically, here’s a chance for you to ask me a question about my endeavors, by commenting to this post. You’ll be choosing the way this section starts off.

  1. Cool Idea Man. I used to LOVE those Books!

I know if you do this as a built up series this will come later on, but I’d like to know how to do more advanced stuff like adding subtle images to enhance the look of the site. Even how you add the search bar into that area of the header puzzles me!

  3. That one is simple. It’s not in the header. It’s actually the first part of the sidebar, and there is the image behind it styled as no-repeat top. Perhaps a post in the making… :)

Hmmm…yeah! ‘no-repeat top’ would be as good a starting point as any! [flies over head]

Hi Brian! I’m always interested in posts about what other designers’ processes are. You think “I want to develop a new theme.” What do you do next? Do you put pencil to paper and sketch out a grid, or do you sketch on the computer? How do you choose a color scheme? What tools do you use? etc.

  6. Great question Randa - will definitely start out with that one!

I’d also like to see a series or single article, like “the anatomy of a wordpress theme”. From initial concept inspiration to the completed release.

Also, when working on a theme, do you have a concrete theme sketch and stick to it or does it evolve and change as you work through the style sheet?

Does it have to be just about WordPress themes and stuff?

  9. No Dirk, it won’t be all Wordpress, although since that is my preferred blogging platform, it will primarily be. Chris, more great questions, and should be addressed soon.
