It’s been a while since I have released a free WordPress theme, but I’m very happy to announce that I have developed a special Revolution blog theme that will be available at no cost.
Similar to the phpBB3 forum templates, the blog theme will be available on the main Revolution site.
Go ahead and check out the demo site, and let me know what you think. My hope is to add some additional style sheets, so that this will be available in a variety of colors. But for now, blue is the default color scheme for the free blog theme.
Comments and suggestions welcome. After I receive some feedback, I will wrap it nicely, put a bow on top and make it available to everyone hopefully by early next week!
Here’s a screenshot below, so you can see what it looks like:

Looks really good Brian. Like the layout and it looks more like a site than a blog which is good.
One thing – I am viewing it using Firefox on a Mac and the GO button next to the search bar is on the line below and hidden underneath the wrap. Just a little thing to solve perhaps.
Good work though.
I love it!
Thanks Mark for the feedback – I just adjusted some css – can you tell me if it’s fixed now, or if it’s still happening?
Very nice Brian!
Yes Brian that has sorted it.
Thanks Tracy – appreciate it.
Mark, great news, thanks for the spot and your help!
Hi Brian, I’m loving the look of that theme and will quite possibly pick it up for use on my blog, and wait a little longer before using one of your paid themes!
The only think I have noticed is that the ‘Categories’ section in the sidebar doesn’t have any kind of icon like the others have. (Not sure if it’s mean’t to be like that?!) Anyway, I’m viewing it from IE7 if that helps you at all?
And some additional style sheets would be GREAT! A simple, but easy way of changing the look and feel of your blog.
Thanks
Mark
Mark – thanks for catching that – I fixed it, had something to do with the stylesheet. Depending on the response from users on this theme, then I will make a decision if/how many stylesheets to create.
Any specific plugins or custom admin panels planned for this theme? How about 2-3 column options?
Looks good and works fine in IE6, FF2, Opera 9, and Safari 3 on XP.
Shaun – no, the intent on this one is to make it easy on the user – the only thing I had in mind was possibly adding a Theme Options tab for the WP dashboard, to include a place for the ad banner (field for image source and destination url) but aside from that it’s pretty straight forward.
The theme looks good Brian. And I too think a two column template option and would be helpful and I’d be interested in a few other colors like red, green, brown.
Brian, your creativity continues to be outstanding. As someone who bought and paid for the Revolution theme template, and, as a very happy customer, I love that you are giving back with the free wordpress templates.
Neat!
Kevin – yes, the 2 column version will also be done, that is definitely in the plans.
Alexandra – thanks so much for the continued support, the theme purchase and for the kind words. I knew that releasing a free theme was long overdue, and I look forward to seeing how people use this one!
Winner. Pure and simple.
Nice Kentucky blue
Can’t wait to use it.
Lovely theme Brian! I am still new at blogging, using your Dropshadow theme & loving it, thanks kindly. Quick question: When you are designing a theme is there a reason why you do not put a field that shows the post blogger’s name? Would that be hard to add? Reason asking is because if the blog has multiple contributors, for ID purposes? Just curious. Much respect!
I have a major problem with this theme. It’s not available yet! I bought your Revolution News theme for one of my sites (awesome), but the site I’m developing now calls for something exactly like this. Come on, Brian. No sleep ’til this is good-to-go I’ll pay to get it early! Keep up the great work.
Looking good Brian.
this theme looks a bit like your vertigo theme, but its nice
but one questions: where are the links to the single comments? i can´t find them.
Gorgeous!
Looks like another winner, Brian. The only thing that would stop me from using it is a design preference: I like 3-column with sidebars on both sides and the posts in the middle. I’m new to all of this, though, perhaps that is something that the user can modify without much trouble?
Veery nice.. Thank’s Brian.
Success for you Brian!
I see all your theme nice full
Hey Brian, i like your all themes. i am waiting re-design for Silhouette Theme too.
Very nice Brian—thanks.
Looks good Brian, thanks once again. Now we have so much choice, which is a good thing. An I am seeing your themes popping up all over the place. May be we should have a site called spot the gardener theme.com One such site rocked. Here is the link:

Great blog and the content is interesting too.

Hi Brian!Wow… loving the free theme.
One suggestion though, can you fix the 3 errors in the CSS to make it fully validated? Thanks.
Hey everyone – a quick thanks for the recent comments regarding the theme – Dulce, which errors are you referring to? I know there is validation issue with the demo because of the Google Adsense code, but what else is there?
Good Job,
That cruise really make the creative juices flow. I like the blue color it is really pleasing to the eye and the overall style is very clean.
If you try other colors try using some earth tones and see how that would work.
Phenomenal Job…
W3C CSS Validator gave these errors. Kindly check it here.
Thanks for the fast reply, Brian.
Dulce – thanks, I saw the errors and fixed them for the download files.
Fantastic! Thanks for the fast workaround. I’ve added your theme right away at our WordPress themes gallery. Thumbs up!
I’m praying that you’ll make the header graphic easy to customize for noobs, so we may insert something as simple as:
MySite.com
…with room for a tag line underneath.
Great Work!
Martin
Hey Taiger, thanks so much for the kind words about our site, AskDanAndJennifer.com.
We love Brian and the great work he’s doing.
Have an awesome day!
Dan & Jennifer
It looks great Brian good work. One thing I had an issue with is I use the for paragraph headings and it chopped up my post pretty good. It is just a style sheet issue though on my end.
Brian, much appreciate their issues, mainly the Magazine. But would be much better if you offer in this and the next few issues, a choice of single page with 3 columns. One the left side and one on the right.
I would be more interesting for monetization.
Congratulations for the great work!
Very good looking theme Brian. Does it come in different color or enable us to change the color from blue to something else?
DemoPit
Thanks for the continued responses to the theme – fyi, the theme is now available for download.
Brian, I have to tell you, the more I looked at this theme, the more I liked it. I have used many of your themes and I wanted something that used the tags, and a few other items and they are all in this theme.
One of your best, thanks for sharing it with everyone.
Geez Scott, you don’t waste any time, do ya? Great looking site so far, I see you’ve gotten a lot of things done with it already.
Glad I came up with something that you wanted!
I’m setting up my first Wordpress site, and have spent the last week in frustration trying to find a well laid out, functional, and professional appearing theme.
… I just found it!
Thanks for the great theme.
I’d like to 2nd the motion, in the desire to see a 3 column option with split sidebars.
Changing the header was easy – just cut & paste code from the Read Me file. If I can do it, anyone can. Very functional theme. Changing the widgets around was easy. I actually set my site up with a single sidebar, as I had already posted some oversize graphics. I’ll switch back to a double sidebar, after I figure out how to downsize my graphics.
Thanks Again.
That is nice theme. Thanks
Clean, simple and elegant. Those have become trademarks of your designs, Brian. The blog theme is just another notch for the Revolution empire.
I’ve downloaded the theme to test for my personal site.
Great theme.
Is there a way to remove the green rectangle where the ads would normally be? It’s just that I don’t have ads on my blog and it looks funny just having the green box sitting there.
Thanks!
I am new to wordpress and this is probably a dumb question, do you have to subscribe to custom css in order to add the template? If so, how do you do it?
Great Theme.
Where is a good place to go to learn how to “customize” this theme.
I used to use K2 and the “custom header” was built in and easy.
I want to change the word ” REVOLUTION” and put a pic in the “green” area.
Can someone point me to a good resource?

We have a little sports podcast show going.
Thanks.

I simply would like to change revolution to the name of my blog is that possible? Novice so had to ask
As a blog-newbee I really appreciated the support you give for your new template. Commendable! I liked your Revolution Magazine theme, but since I am too new to all this, I am going to stay with the free template until I get enough experience to switch.
How can I replace the “R” favicon with mine? I ftp my own favicon into my site, but when I repress my blog, the “R” favicon still shows.
Thanks
What a super layout.
Looks smooth and professional.
Nice XHTML coding. Easy for the eyes.
Could you include a PSD for the header next time?
To change the header from “Revolution” to the name of your blog, edit the header.php file.
Replace:
<a href=”/”><img src=”/images/logo.gif” alt=”" />
with:
<a href=”/”>
It worked on my site.
Today I created my new Blog, I choose your free theme: Blue Zinfandel. Thanks for your good Job
Brian,
This is a great theme and I just grabbed it too. I was wondering what the adsense line in the index.php was about?
Just another piece of art
All your themes are great man!
I saw this theme and wanted to convert my current syllabus site to a WP managed site. I do not know php and the innards of WP, so I am at a loss to figure out how to add a multi-level menu structure at the top. I will greatly appreciate any assistance you may provide on this. My current site is at:
http://academic.cemalekin.com
and I am planning to make the following my new syllabus site:
http://www.cemalekin.com/index.php
Thanks in advance
I think I have discovered the answer, it could not have been simpler. Thank you.
I am back with another question. Although the instructions say “There are no limits to how deeply nested you can make pages” a third level page does not show up in the menu. In the “Pages” listing I see the following (roughly):
Must Read
- On Writing
— Documents
all indicating the child-parent relationship correctly. But on the menu only the second level items show up. I can certainly put “Documents” on the second level but I wanted to report this behavior in case it needs fixing.
What font are you using in the header logo? Seems like a condensed Helvetica but none of mine match.
Great theme; thanks for making it a free one.
Tim – thanks, the font is Hypatia Sans Pro!
Just downloaded it, this looks like it’s going to be a fun ride. Thanks!
Brian, awesome theme – but I’ve found that it doesn’t handle inline images in posts very well.
Some examples:
http://www.fiftieshouse.com/2007/06/08/were-not-dead-yet/
http://www.fiftieshouse.com/2006/05/23/paint-suggestions/
I’ve been able to make it a *little* better with larger images (500px wide) by changing the CSS so that #contentleft{width} is smaller (say 520px), but haven’t found a solution for posts with inline small images yet.
For example, a post with a larger image:
http://weblog.mrbill.net/archives/2008/05/24/fun-with-vmware/
If I dont reduce contentleft-width, the text tries to wrap around the right hand side of the image.
Any suggestions?
I’m having trouble with posting graphic images within the text body of articles. The theme seems to automatically insert the graphic at the top of the post.
When I try to post an article with multiple images (stock charts for example) within the same post, I have to stop, switch to html mode vs. visual; and then copy & paste the html code into the proper body text area, and then switch back to “visual” to continue writing body text.
Also, unless I use a full size image, the text automatically wraps around the graphics (regardless if I use no align, left, right, or center), in odd ways – and I’ve found no way to correct this, other than to use maximum/over-sized images that take up the entire text block width of the post.
Any fixes for this? It’s taking me “hours” to write a WP post (switching back & forth from “visual” to “html” mode, and cutting & pasting, html text of the graphics, and then re-positioning them in the text) containing multiple graphic charts, that should only take me “minutes.”
Thanks
Nevermind on my question – I’ve switched back to a different theme that handles inline images in posts correctly.
Brian, all my thanks! I’ve followed you since I found this site and your awesome work. Let me say that’s the best free theme I’ve ever seen here and anywhere on the net!
I hope you’ll really give us the possibility to have it in a different (red??!) color scheme as soon as possible. In that case, it will be such an obliged choice!!
Kind regards,
Vale
