5 Blogs That I Will Read Everyday in 2008
I have been trying to think about things to write about these days, and I might even open that up for discussion on another upcoming post. In the meantime, I thought I would challenge myself with something fun for this year (albeit the New Year’s Blog Resolution of mine is a few weeks late.) So here’s to the New Year and a little blog fun!
One of the things that I mentioned in my post entitled “20 Reasons to Celebrate the New Year” was that I was very excited about having more time to read blogs. Below are 5 blogs that I plan to read everyday - some are for fun, some are for business. Nonetheless, they are blogs that I think are worth a daily visit.
Freelance Switch
This is a pretty obvious selection, mainly because two weeks ago I threw away my cushy day job to follow some pipe dream of being a freelance website/blog designer and consultant. The amount of quality content on this site is amazing, and I can guarantee that it will be a very good resource for me along the way.
One
ONE is Americans of all beliefs and every walk of life - united as ONE - to help make poverty history. Many of you are aware that I participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day event, but my heart also goes out to the under-resourced. One of the things that I want to do while spending my life on the web is not to lose track of what’s really important in life, and committing to reading this blog everyday should help keep things in perspective.
A List Apart
This is one of those blogs that I have purposely avoided because every time I visit the site, I feel really stupid. Being a self-taught designer, there are a lot of things that I don’t know how to do, and sometimes when I read A List Apart, I feel like I’m in another country trying to read a menu. However, it’s time to stretch myself, and learn some things that will help make my designs and themes better for you all.
Whoorl
I don’t think you can pay me enough money to stay off of this site. When I first started reading her blog, I was a big-time lurker, and just read it for fun. Well this past year Sarah and I have gotten to become friends, and I even had the privilege of doing her latest blog design. Always fun, always witty, this is a no-brainer everyday read to take off the edge.
The Cruise Log
Obviously this falls into the “fun” category, but it’s no secret that my wife Shelly and I love to cruise. It’s pretty funny because she practically had to beg me to try one for our honeymoon 5 1/2 years ago, and since then, we’ve taken 9 cruises. Anyway, aside from the exotic scenery, delicious food and the great entertainment, I actually find the idea of cruise boat engineering and construction rather interesting. This should be a fun one to read, and it will keep me excited about our upcoming cruise in March to the Caribbean.
Now for the fun part.
I want to know which blogs you plan to read this year - so leave a comment (although your list doesn’t have to have 5 blogs) of the ones you want to dedicate your readership to!

Hmm. Quite a challenge. I read both far too many and far too few blogs to do this, so I’ll just aim for five interesting ones.
Daring Fireball — For general links of interest.
The Page — Because I’m something of a politics/campaign junky.
Postsecret — Because it’s so fascinating.
Slashdot — Because even though it doesn’t break news like it used to, I’m still a sucker for tradition.
[daily dose of imagery] — Because it’s still the best photo blog I know.
Thanks for pointing out almost all new sites to me. I plan to have a look. I know this isn’t so related, but I wanted to purchase the Revolution theme and was wondering if it will be easy to change the square ads in the backend? Also, is there a way to keep track of the stats on the ads so we can give reports to advertisers about click-throughs and pageviews? Thank you so much and sorry I had to ask you in a comment rather than the contact page - I just really need to start working on this project. Thanks.
NYT - Its a great way to get up-to-speed.
Wired Blogs -One of the smartest groups of tech bloggers.
VentureBeat - Some of the best reporting on what tech deals may be appearing on the horizon.
AnyWired - Skellie’s new blog about online work.
I also have to second Brian’s vote for Freelance Switch as having great content for those leaving the confines of their cubicle.
Well Brian, I have to start by putting yours at the top of the list. Even though you do not post everyday I still come here looking for something I may have missed
So here is mine..
Brian Gardner - No explanation needed!
Entrepreneurs - Journey - Yaro’s blog has some pretty informative material and inspiration.
Macuser - Because I am one
Pro Blogger-Darren Rowse - Another one that everyone I am sure knows about.
Google System - I love Google and I like staying on top of the latest so I find this one quite interesting.
Ok thats mine!
Brian, I appreciate the link to ONE; it seems to be a perfect organization to get behind.
Thanks, Brian, for another great post. You remind me of an adage I used to pass around: If you admire someone, ask them what they most like to read—that is the surest way to becoming more like them. Looking over your list and those of your readers, I am impressed that we are in the midst of a major switch in journalism. No longer do I need to subscribe to or track down issues of magazines and copies of books—I can stay well-informed on the web. I do need to know which sites best suit my interests, though. This post helps me find that out.
Three of your five could make it on my daily list too. Right now, the only blogs I visit on a regular basis are my own—Roadturn and Hosanna. My time is so condensed that it is everything I can do to keep those updated. Just today, I was going back over my mission and goals in an attempt to feel more in control of my schedule. I can see that I need to do some things more and not do some things at all. Staying in touch with other bloggers is one of those activities that are necessary. Thank you for pointing that out to me.
Some that I like, other than yours and mine, are: Hobo Traveler,
Old White Guy, and Teaching Gen X.
Man, there is a lot of good stuff out there. It is impossible to keep up with it all, though, so my ambition is to choose wisely…
Wishing you the very best in your new “job.”
Don, I agree we are in the midst of a journalism revolution. Today’s blogs are akin to the pamphleteer, producing a wide range of information from the simply terrible to real breaking news.
Hey all - thanks for some great links, and explanations as to why you like them. I find it fascinating to see what others read on the internet!
John Boardley’s I Love Typography.
John knows an incredible amount about typography, and he shares a lot through his popular blog. Type work is the cornerstone to good design, so for me it’s certainly recommended.
David - Another fan of typography. Boardley’s blog is just gorgeous and eye-candy for those of us who actually set a stick of type or even know what a Lino or Goss is. In an age where YouTube rules and images seem to trump everything, it’s nice to remember lettering and type style are at the foundation of everything.
Very true, Ed.
I had a quick look at your website. Nice choice of theme there.
I subscribe to about 100 feeds, from problogging to politics to sports — jack of all trades, master of none and whatnot. But if I were to pick 5 that most people don’t yet read, they’d be:
Stuck In Customs — Amazing HDR photography from a guy that routinely travels the world.
Waiter Rant — Biting satire/commentary from a career waiter — easily the best “classic” style of writing I’ve seen on the web.
Best of Craigslist — It’s amazing what some people will actually post on Craigslist (mostly from the rants/raves section)
PaulStamatiou.com — Tech news/reviews/guides on a personal level
TechPresident — Chronicling the use of technology in the presidential campaign
Having just found your site, it is now on my list of ’sites to watch’
also keep an eye on the following
